Liam Gallagher loves Manchester

Liam Gallagher is not known for holding back when it comes to telling it like it is. And this weekend’s appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show is no exception.

Speaking about his brother Noel, who he says won’t engage with the idea of ending their feud for an Oasis comeback, Liam says: “I think we’re both the problem and the problem is that he thinks he’s not the problem.

“He thinks I’m both the problems. Whereas I’m just a problem. I’m half the problem, whereas I can’t be having him thinking I’m the full problem. He needs to take on some of the problem.

“The minute he does that we’ll move on.”

He adds: “He needs to own his problem… No [I haven’t spoken to him]. I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Liam is joined on the Saturday night show by fellow guests The Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas, comedians Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont, Dancing On Ice and Don’t Hate The Playaz star Lady Leshurr, and artist Grayson Perry.

Asked by fellow guest Jon if they’d do Gogglebox together as a first step, Liam says: “Maybe the Bake Off… maybe we’ll just bake some bread and that or a cake or throw strawberries at each other. Have a cream fight. That kind of stuff. Now you’re talking.”

On doing a reunion via Zoom so they don’t have to be in the same room together, Liam says: “Nah…”.

Then he adds: “Who cares anyway? I know for a fact there’s nothing left on the table. We did have a good crack. We did everything. We didn’t leave anything on the table. Like, nothing.

“When someone offers you 100 million pounds to do a few gigs and that man, you’re going to go, ‘Alright then yeah…’ there was a lot of money knocking about.

“It was 100 million pounds to do a tour and that, and I’m thinking, ‘I’m not a d***head, know what I mean? I’ll have a bit of that.’

“He’s not into it is he? He’s after a knighthood isn’t he?”

Liam adds: “You can ask him next time. For hundred million quid I’d do that…” before saying: “Never say never.”

Discussing his latest solo single, All You’re Dreaming Of, which he performs in the studio at the end of the show, Liam says it’s a festive number.

“Yeah. I don’t think it would work coming out in June. When I first heard it, and first started messing around with it, it reminded me of like old New York, when you go to New York, the old windows when they start decorating them at Christmas.

“It had that old Bing Crosby vibe, we played a bit on that. It’s now or never. I think it’s amazing man. It’s for a good cause and it is what it is man.

“It’s for the children. For Action for Children. I’ve got enough [money]. I’ll only end up buying another parka. It’s charity and that, which is nice.”

On whether he’s now more confident as a solo artist, he says: “I’ve always felt confident. That has never, ever swayed me.”

He continues: “No, not really [had self doubt]. I’m afraid of spiders and stuff like that…

“I’ve got nothing to not be confident about. It’s easy being me, I get up, sing my songs, say what I say, I don’t lie, I’m not here for a career and that.

“There’s going to be people that don’t like me, give a s***. Know what I mean? There’s going to be people that love me – that’s cool. There’s nothing to worry about.”

He adds: “I know exactly who I am and I know exactly who I’m not.”

On the topic of the legendary rivalry with Blur, guest Matt Lucas discusses touring with the Britpop band.

“I think it was a case of mistaken identity,” he says.

“Damien Hirst and Keith Allen who were the directors of the Country House video asked Vic and Bob, ‘Who’s that bald guy you work with?’

“They were thinking of Les from the Big Night Out. But, then they suggested me. So I think I was cast by mistake in that video.

“But then, we got along. I ended up supporting them on tour. I toured with Blur the week they released The Great Escape, which is a wonderful album.”

Liam quips: “Didn’t sell much though, did it. Not as much as Morning Glory.”

Liam also discusses the fact that he’s had to postpone his wedding due to COVID-19.

“I was meant to get married as well so that was a bummer. That had to wait and that.

“Doing the gigs and stuff, I’ve always digged what I do and I’m proud of doing the gigs and being in a band. Missing it, it’s a pain in the arse, but it is what it is.!

And how has the singer found lockdown?

“I haven’t got a problem with lockdown, a lot of people are worse off than me,” he says. “I just can’t go out and wear a parka.

“I bought a tepee. I had one before, but it got battered, a deer ran in and got stuck in it. There was a deer in there with big antlers.

“I bought a new one, could get them cheap in the summer as there was no Glastonbury.”

You can watch the full interview on The Jonathan Ross Show, Saturday 28th November, 9.35pm on ITV.
