After 20 transformative years as Chief Executive Officer, Revd David Ireland has retired from his role at Francis House Children’s Hospice, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of compassion, innovation, and dedication.

From architectural blueprints to nurturing families in their most challenging moments, David’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

David Ireland joined Francis House in 1994 as a trustee, and in 2005, transitioned from his career as an architect to become the CEO, following the retirement of the hospice’s founder, Sister Aloysius.

Over the years, David not only led the hospice but also redefined what it means to provide care, stability, and solace to children, young adults, and their families.

His architectural expertise played a pivotal role in transforming a former convent in Didsbury into a welcoming sanctuary, and his vision helped expand services with Francis Lodge, residential care units for young people, and a psychotherapy unit to support emotional and psychological needs.

David’s leadership extended beyond operational excellence. A chaplain at heart, he offered comfort and strength to every family, knowing them by name and standing by them in their most vulnerable moments. His ability to combine practicality with compassion resonated deeply with staff and families alike.

“It’s been a huge part of my life”

Reflecting on his tenure, David said, “Francis House has been a huge part of my life from its very inception…It has been the greatest privilege to have been able to follow in the footsteps of Sister Aloysius, the founder of the hospice.”

A global influence

His influence reached far beyond the North West, inspiring hospices around the world in countries such as Japan, Bosnia Herzegovina, and the Czech Republic. David championed the importance of good palliative care for children and teenagers on a global scale.

As staff, volunteers, and trustees bid him a heartfelt farewell, tributes poured in, highlighting his immense contributions.

Sharon Doodson, the Registered Manager and Director of Care at Francis House, said: “David’s vision, dedication, and  commitment have shaped our hospice into the well-established, compassionate service it is today. From his early days on the Board of Trustees in 1994 to leading as CEO for the past 20 years, his passion for supporting children, young people and their families has never wavered.

“Beyond his leadership, David has been a source of comfort and support, not just as a CEO but as a chaplain who knows every family by name. His presence will be deeply missed by staff and families. While we will feel the impact of his absence, we are incredibly grateful for his lasting legacy. We wish him well in his retirement and hope he can now take the time to relax, knowing he has built something truly remarkable.”

Rachael Taylor takes over as CEO

David’s successor, Rachael Taylor, now steps into the role of CEO. Having served as Assistant to the Chief Executive for 13 years, Rachael promises continuity and innovation as Francis House begins a new chapter.

Francis House trustee and High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Eamonn O’Neal, presented David with a High Sheriff Special Recognition Award, stating, “David is a fine example of how contributing to a compassionate society through dedicated service can make a huge difference to those who need support at the most difficult times.”

Though David now steps back to enjoy a well-deserved retirement, his legacy at Francis House remains a testament to the power of compassion, vision, and unwavering commitment. As Rachael Taylor takes the helm, she inherits not only the position but the extraordinary foundation that David built—a legacy of love, care, and hope for families who need it the most.
