When dancer and fire-breather Sophie Lee was booked to perform at 22 at a huge event in Chicago, it felt like a dream come true.
Little did Sophie know it was about to become a nightmare.
In a freak accident, an air-conditioning unit blasted fire back at Sophie, sending her face and chest up in flames, changing her image forever.
Out of a tragedy, Sophie has been on an exploration of herself and has now penned a book about the process of learning to love herself.

Sophie Lee Interview
“It took 27 years for me to feel comfortable in my skin,” Sophie revealed.
“But through the pain and chaos, I discovered an unexpected wellspring of strength.
“I learned that challenges can empower rather than overpower us.”
From her formative years in China to the crucible of schoolyard bullying and racial prejudice upon immigrating to England, Sophie’s narrative is one punctuated by adversity.
“School was harsh. It’s harsh now. But back then, kids were just ruthless,” she recounted.
Chinese representation
“As a young Chinese girl, I yearned for representation in the public eye. Apart from maybe Lucy Lu, but she was one of Charlie’s Angels!”
Yet, it was amidst these experiences that Sophie unearthed the resilience to reclaim her narrative.
Embracing her Chinese heritage and cultural traditions became a source of solace and strength in adversity.
“I realised that my identity was not defined by the judgments of others but by the richness of my heritage,” she asserts with quiet determination.
“As I entered adulthood and pursued a career as a performer, I found myself consumed by the personas I portrayed, overshadowing my true self.
“However, when I experienced an accident and subsequently discovered a tumour on my face, it unearthed all the unresolved wounds from my past.
“This pivotal moment propelled me into a journey of self-discovery and healing, forcing me to confront and accept my intrinsic worth.
“Through this process, I came to the realisation that I am enough just as I am, a sentiment that extends to everyone regardless of gender identity or stage in life.
“It’s a reminder not to be deceived by societal standards of success, which often equate worth with material possessions or achievements at a young age.”
Throughout her journey, Sophie grappled with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, exacerbated by toxic relationships and societal expectations.
“I was consumed by the personas I portrayed, overshadowing my true self,” she confided.
But it was in confronting these inner demons that she discovered the transformative power of authenticity and self-worth.
“Life is inherently imperfect, yet it unfolds exactly as it should,” Sophie muses, her voice imbued with wisdom born of experience.
“We must trust in our own journey and the decisions that have led us to where we are today.”
Central to this ethos is the recognition that success is not measured by external validation but by the depth of one’s commitment and resilience.
Trust in your own journey
Sophie continued: “What’s meant for you will find its way to you, regardless of the obstacles you encounter.
“Every choice you make, every decision you act upon, contributes to the unique path you’re meant to follow.
“It’s crucial not to second-guess your own choices based on others’ opinions.
“People’s judgments are often more about them than about you. In reality, most individuals are preoccupied with managing their own lives and concerns.
“While everyone may have an opinion, it’s important to recognise that these opinions often serve as distractions from their own realities.
“Ultimately, the value of others’ perspectives is subjective, and their significance in your life is minimal.
“Trust in your own journey and the decisions you’ve made, knowing that they have led you exactly where you need to be.”
Today, Sophie channels her experiences into a beacon of hope for others navigating the scary waters of self-discovery.
As a motivational speaker, she imparts invaluable lessons on resilience and authenticity, urging others to embrace their true selves unapologetically.
“We’ve seen the devastating toll that societal pressures can exact, especially on young people,” Sophie observes with empathy.
“It’s completely normal to grapple with imposter syndrome, a feeling that often plagues many individuals, including myself, daily.
“I am currently a motivational speaker, engaging with audiences in schools, seminars, and empowerment events tailored for women.
“It’s a profound moment of personal growth for me, considering my past experiences as a bullied student who hated school.
“To find myself back in this environment now is wild!
“At the age of 15, I vowed never to return, yet here I am, consciously choosing to embrace and share my story.”
“I believe it’s crucial to have speakers who can relate to the younger demographic, like myself, and share insights on navigating the influencer world and social media platforms.
“While individuals with more life experience are undoubtedly valuable, teenagers often prioritise social dynamics, appearance, and relationships, rather than considering the implications of online presence.”
In “In My Skin,” Sophie bares her soul, inviting readers on a transformative journey of self-discovery and acceptance.
Her story serves as a poignant reminder that, no matter the obstacles we face, we possess the strength and resilience to rise above adversity and embrace our true selves.
