It was a special birthday for Spice Girls star Mel B in Manchester – celebrated on stage with 50,000 fans.

And the icing on the cake?  A towering four-tier leopard print cake wheeled out in Scary Spice’s honour.

The incredible £800 confection, adorned with leopard print sugar craft and black frill details, was created by renowned Whitefield  chocolatier and pattisier Slattery.

“It was a very last minute request,” said owner John Slattery. “We got the request on Tuesday and they wanted it ready for Wednesday.

“We got a call from the Spice Girls event organisers. They asked for something big and something in the style of her character – Scary Spice.”

The impressive four tier cake was filled with Victoria sponge – no relation to Posh Spice – and was baked, iced and hand painted by baker extraordinaire Jess Fulcher.

“It took 14 hours in total to create,” says John. “It was left to set overnight then on Wednesday morning it was hand painted and covered with diamantes and black stars in amongst the black feathers. A lot of work went into it.”

For anyone wanting to treat themselves or a loved one to a cake of that size you would be looking at around £800.

“Those were not your average sized tiers, they were very large. They asked for big and that’s what they got,” added John.

Scary, aka Melanie Brown, marked her 44th birthday on stage at the Etihad Stadium, surrounded by her bandmates (minus Posh Spice) and almost 50,000 adoring fans who joined in a chorus of Happy Birthday.

The singer took time to remind the sold-out crowd that it was exactly 21 years to the day when Geri Horner left the band back in 1998, and she remembered it well because it was on her birthday.

Mel B then went on to joke with Geri, telling her: “You better not leave tonight you f*****g b***h”

Mel B seemed very impressed with her towering, personalised cake when it was presented to her. The Leeds lass couldn’t resist having a taste before it got taken off the stage, taking a big swipe and saying how delicious it was.

The brazen singer then threw a chunk of the cake at Ginger Spice as the pair went on to playfully slap cake onto each other.

We hope that the girls got a chance to enjoy the masterpiece when they continued the celebrations back at their hotel – Manchester’s new Dakota Hotel – later that evening.

John added: “We are very flattered to be asked to create this cake, we put a lot of work into it and it’s great for us to have created something for the iconic Spice Girls”
