Chorlton Public Library

For over a century, Chorlton Library has been a cherished cornerstone of the community, brimming with history and shared stories.

Now, after an extraordinary transformation, this Grade II listed landmark has been reborn—its rich past uncovered and its future secured. A place that has long welcomed generations through its doors has been lovingly restored, ensuring it remains a cultural and educational hub for years to come.

Originally opened in 1914 as a generous gift from Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the library was designed by City Architect Henry Price, who also crafted the architectural plans for Didsbury Library.

Chorlton Library refurbishment

After years of serving the local community, the library has now emerged from an extensive refurbishment that has not only enhanced its facilities but also uncovered long-hidden architectural treasures.

One of the most striking revelations of the restoration process is the stunning dome in the library entrance, now on full display after being concealed for decades. Accompanied by the mezzanine gallery, the newly revealed space allows natural light to cascade into the entrance area, transforming the ambiance of the library.

Throughout the renovation, careful attention was given to preserving the library’s historic charm. Original tiles and historic lettering, which had adorned key areas of the building, were rediscovered and meticulously restored, offering visitors a glimpse into the library’s rich past.

Critical upgrades and preserving historic charm

At the same time, critical upgrades have been implemented to modernize the building. The exterior stonework and windows have been repaired, and the electrical and mechanical systems have been renewed to enhance energy efficiency, aligning with the council’s ambitious target of becoming carbon neutral by 2038.

Inside, the removal of internal walls has unveiled the original octagonal layout of the atrium space, seamlessly blending the library’s historical design with contemporary elements. The reconfigured library areas offer a refreshed and inviting atmosphere, celebrating both the past and the future in equal measure.

The next stage of Chorlton Library’s refurbishment

With the library now reopening its doors to the community, attention will soon turn to the next phase of the refurbishment. The rear of the building will undergo further development to create flexible community and meeting spaces, which are set to open later in the year.

Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills, Employment, and Leisure, expressed his enthusiasm for the reopening, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome the community back to this much-loved library. It is the last of our libraries to undergo a full refurbishment as part of our Library Renewal Programme. Our refurbishment has not only respected the building’s history but brought it up to date, ensuring it can serve the local community in the future while meeting our sustainability plans and carbon-neutral targets.

“Revealing the dome and other hidden gems make this reopening even more special, and we can’t wait to share it with the local community who we know love it as much as we do.”
