Northern Quarter burrito joint Luck Lust Liquor & Burn has had a fresh new revamp. It’s  lighter, brighter and more grown-up with cool pops of colour and lots of plants.

And there’s a new menu to match, inspired, they say, by the food found on the sun-soaked streets of Southern California and misadventures on the back streets of Tijuana.

“Indulgently, I wanted somewhere cool as f**k to go and eat the kinda food I love,” says director Beau Myers.

“It’s fun food, it’s social food, it’s all about friends and sharing – good times – wild times – making memories.”

The new menu features Cali-style tacos, burritos packed with sizzling juicy meats and freshly chopped salads, and a wider vegan-friendly selection using tempeh protein and vegan mayo based sauces. We went to try it out.

Chicken blasts (juicy, boneless crispy chicken pieces) now come drenched in Korean BBQ sauce as well as hot Buffalo or sweet Hawaiian BBQ. They’re utterly addictive, sticky, sweet, salty with soy and finished with a kick of chilli.

A veggie version uses buttermilk fried cauliflower.

Fresh as F**k nachos are vegetarian and much lighter than expected, loaded with melted cheese, Cholula hot sauce and fresh jalapeños, crisp iceberg lettuce, pico de gallo salsa, smashed guacamole, lime jalapeno mayo and taco sauce.

Surfin Cali tacos are huge and messy, packed with steak, crispy fried shrimp, tater tots, iceberg, cheddar, pico, jalapeno mustard, chipotle sour cream, guac mayo, chipotle hot sauce and red chillies.

Cheeseburger tacos are not new, but who can resist? Think crispy beef, melted cheddar, burger cheese, bacon ketchup, chipotle sour cream, a dusting of bacon rain, diced pickle and onion, and crispy fries.

A Sin City burrito is a whopper, fat with smoky steak, crispy beef, chorizo, cheese melt, pickled jalapenos, fries, Wonderbutter, iceberg, pico, bleu cheese, chipotle hot sauce, jalapeno mustard and peppered mayo.

Burrito Beach is filled to bursting with hot chicken blasts, bacon, Wonderbutter, cheddar, spicy rice, avocado, iceberg, pico, creamy bleu cheese sauce and hot wing sauce.

A fully vegan burrito called Ariana Grande is all about big flavours, packed with Cajun spiced tempeh, wonderdusted fries, avocado, lettuce, sundried tomatoes, pico, lime, vegan chipotle mayo, chipotle hot sauce and fresh chillies.

A (slightly) lighter option is a burrito salad, consisting of mixed leaves, zesty avocado, tomato, fresh jalapeños, pomegranate, sun-dried tomatoes, house lime jalapeno dressing, chipotle hot sauce and crispy spiced tortilla pieces.

Top your salad with either dirty chicken, blackened steak or vegan Cajun fried tempeh, and wash it down with a slushy sunset margarita so fresh you’ll feel like you’re kicking back on a beach in Mexico. Because we can’t have things getting too healthy now, can we?

Save room for churros, we’re told. We haven’t, but we order them anyway. Crisp and sugary and delicious, they come with a comforting warm chocolate dipping sauce.

Luck Lust Liquor & Burn isn’t just a late-night taco joint. They’ve expanded the restaurant to encompass the ground floor, increasing dining to 110 covers. There’s extra seating outside, too.

This place has grown up. And so has the menu.
