When it was first released on the big screen in August 1997, it was hard to predict that The Full Monty – a film shot on a shoestring budget with a cast of relatively unknown actors – would go on to be the highest-grossing British film of all time.

But the tale of unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who start a stripping troupe struck a chord with audiences – not just in Britain, but the world over.

Next week, the Sheffield Theatre production returns to Manchester Opera House for its final tour presented by award-winning producers David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers, and directed by Rupert Hill.

Offering up plenty of humour and male camaraderie, not to mention an insightful commentary on post-industrial man, it is perhaps even more relevant today than it was when first released.

The production, based on the highly acclaimed smash hit film, is screenwriter Simon Beaufoy’s first foray into writing for the theatre and has become one of the most phenomenal theatrical productions ever.

This hilarious and heartfelt production features iconic songs from the film by Donna Summer, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones, as well as that famous strip scene, and has received standing ovations every night.

Featuring a hunky, all-star cast, the production is full of laughs but it also touches upon more serious topics such as fatherhood, depression, and unemployment as the men come together to turn their lives around and to help lead character Gaz to see his son again.

Gary Lucy (Hollyoaks, EastEnders, The Bill, Footballers’s Wives) leads the cast as Gaz starring alongside Andrew Dunn (best known as Tony in Dinnerladies) as Gerald, Louis Emerick (Coronation Street, Benidorm, Brookside, Last of the Sumer Wine) as Horse, Joe Gill (Emmerdale) as Lomper, Kai Owen (Torchwood, Hollyoaks) as Dave and James Redmond (Hollyoaks, Casualty) as Guy.

Joining them will be Liz Carney as Jean, Amy Thompson as Mandy, Bryonie Pritchard as Linda and Keeley Fitzgerald as Sharon to help us see the other side of the story, the challenging journeys the women face to stand by their men and how they ultimately take their hats off to them all.

The Full Monty is at the Manchester Opera House from Monday, February 18th to Saturday, February 23rd.
