Here’s how actor Lauren Drew is lighting up Hope Mill Theatre with Lizzie – The Musical

If you watched her sing her heart out on ITV’s The Voice or watched her on stage in the hit musical Six, you will know what I am talking about.

She has joined forces with Manchester’s Maiya Quansah-Breed (Rent), Shekinah McFarlane (Six) and Mari Barclay (Pippin) to star in Lizzie – the Musical, the UK debut of the story of Lizzie Borden – an American woman who was tried and acquitted for the murders of her father and stepmother in 1892.

Think Spring Awakening meets Carrie with the concert feel of Six and the anarchy of Jerry Springer, the Opera and this is Lizzie.

We caught up with Lauren to find out more about the show and why she loves performing at the Hope Mill Theatre.

What did you know about Lizzie Borden prior to this show?

I didn’t know very much about her at all which is surprising considering my fascination with true crime.

So when I got the call I instantly started researching and was hooked.

Not to mention the score is incredible so getting to integrate rock pop vocals with such an interesting true crime story is a gift!

The show is described as a punk rock musical. What is your favourite punk rock song and why?

My favourite punk rock song would have to be No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age. It’s an absolute banger!

What is refreshing about being in a show like this one?

I am given free rein on a role which hasn’t really been done here in the UK. It’s a true gift!

It’s also incredible to have an all-female cast and band!

Our bond is already electric, we’re having the most amazing time.

You starred in Six which has become such a big hit. Why do you think it remains so popular with audiences?

I think there are many reasons.

One of which being that the show delivers such a positive message about embracing individuality, celebrating our differences and again, being an all female cast and band is a rarity and people appreciate that.

The Hope Mill Theatre is very intimate. How is that for a performer?

I’m enjoying performing this show in such an intimate space with such a small cast.

I think as an audience member, you can’t help but be fully immersed in the world we’ve created. It’s a rollercoaster and once you’re on you won’t want to get off.

Lizzie is a bit of a kick-ass musical, in that it is quirky and quite different to what musical theatre audiences are used to. Why should they come along?

Yes it’s different but In the best way. It’s a true crime story with an incredible score that you won’t be able to get out of your head.
