New film looks at Manchester United’s Premier League title win in 1992/93

Today, the Premier League has released the first film in its ‘Iconic Stories’ series in celebration of the League’s 30th anniversary.

The series includes 10 films looking at some of the most memorable matches, seasons and goals in Premier League history, with a different film released each weekday between 8th and 19th August.

Fergie: Rise of a Dynasty, released today, brings together Sir Alex Ferguson, Steve Bruce and Peter Schmeichel to look back at Manchester United’s incredible last-gasp victory against Sheffield Wednesday at Old Trafford in the 1992/93 season, which set them on course to win their first league title in 26 years.

In an exclusive interview, Sir Alex reflects on the transformative game in April 1993 and the team spirit that propelled Manchester United to glory.

“We had scored in the last minute,” says Sir Alex.

“The atmosphere is unbelievable, the players are going crazy, the staff are going crazy.

“And the supporters can’t get home quick enough or get to the pub quick enough to discuss it all.

“That was the value of scoring late goals. The character in the team is unbelievable. They needed the success just as much as I did.”

Sir Alex is the most successful Premier League manager of all time, guiding United to a record 13 titles.

“The great asset that Manchester United had at my time was never giving in,” he says.

“There’s no question about that. Doesn’t matter what the score is, that attitude we had, always fighting right until the very last minute.

“The mental attitude, the winning attitude, I’ve followed that route all my life.

“Winning that league for the first time in 26 years, without doubt it opened a door. After that, there was no stopping us.”

Bruce was the hero in that game, scoring towering headers in the 86th minute and deep into stoppage time to turn the match on its head.

“The holy grail was we had to win the league,” he says, reflecting on what the game meant to the team at the time.

“Even with six games to go, it [the Sheffield Wednesday game] was the one that we had to win.

“We were desperate to win and the euphoria of the whole stadium that day was a certain experience which I’ll never forget.” 

The first Premier League match took place on 15th August 1992. Over the next 30 seasons, 4,488 players from 120 different nations have featured in 11,646 fixtures (correct at the start of the 2022/23 season).

Manchester United are one of only seven clubs to have won the Premier League title.
