If you’ve never heard of Irene Estry, that’s about to change – and trust us, you’ll be glad it did.
This May, Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre will play host to a one-night-only event that promises joy, laughs and a whole lot of inspiration – all in aid of Wythenshawe-based charity Prevent Breast Cancer.
An Audience with Irene Estry
An Audience with Irene Estry and Friends takes place on Sunday, 18th May, and it’s hosted by local TV and radio presenter Michelle Eagleton, who also happens to be an ambassador for the charity.
Michelle wanted to do a fundraiser with a twist, so she’s inviting Manchester to come and meet one of the city’s unsung legends.
“People don’t always know Irene’s name,” Michelle says. “But once you hear about her, you can’t help but love her.”
And it’s easy to see why.
Who is Irene Estry?
Irene Estry is 83 years old and still teaching weekly fitness classes. She was one of the first-ever women to run aerobics sessions in Manchester back in the early 80s – and quickly became Granada TV’s go-to fitness guru, training the cast of Coronation Street behind the scenes for over 40 years. Her clients included the likes of Pat Phoenix (aka Elsie Tanner), Helen Worth, Denise Welch, and many more.
At one point, she was even a body double on Corrie.
She’s got stories by the bucketload and energy that could put a 25-year-old to shame.
“Irene is unstoppable,” says Michelle. “She’s inspired so many people to just go for it, whatever their age.”
The evening will be packed with special guests – celebrity make-up artist Armand Beasley, singer-songwriter Jennie Sawdon, former Coronation Street star and movie actor Scott Wright and many more…
It’s a celebration of Irene’s wild and wonderful life, but also a chance to shine a spotlight on something close to her heart – staying well as we age, and feeling good in your skin at every stage of life.
Prevent Breast Cancer
All profits from the show will go directly to Prevent Breast Cancer, the UK’s only breast cancer charity entirely focused on prediction and prevention, based at The Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.
“We’ve already sold half the tickets without even pushing it,” she says. “But we’d love to sell out – and every seat filled means more funds for the charity’s incredible work.”
So whether you remember Irene from her Corrie days, want to feel inspired, or just fancy a good night out with a difference, this is one not to miss.
