2023 was without doubt a fantastic year for Manchester

So if Manchester nailed 2023, it looks as though Stockport is set for an incredible ride in 2024

Stockport in 2024

Stockport is gearing up to make 2024 a year of unprecedented success. The borough, heralded as one of the best places to live and work, is poised to elevate its status with a slew of transformative projects, events, and community initiatives.

Regeneration and Modernisation in Stockport

Stockport’s skyline is set to be reshaped with the completion of a monumental transformation – the old bus station evolving into a modern transport interchange.

This colossal project is not just about efficient transport; it’s about creating a communal haven. A two-acre park atop the interchange, adorned with nearly 500 trees, beckons as a green oasis.

This visionary space integrates sustainable features like a ‘blue-roof’ drainage system and solar panels, ensuring environmental responsibility.

Pedestrians and cyclists are in for a treat, as the interchange facilitates improved access to the town center, rail station, Merseyway, and the River Mersey.

The state-of-the-art facilities include a covered passenger concourse, 18 bus stands, and a Travelshop, promising a seamless commuting experience.

Stockport Exchange’s Prosperous Phases

Stockport Exchange, the town’s business hub, is reaching new heights with the completion of its fourth phase. A 64,000 sq ft office building and a 399-space multi-storey car park are set to enhance the area’s commercial landscape. This development has already lured national and international firms, and with HURSTS accountants signing up for the latest phase, Stockport Exchange continues to attract diverse businesses, fostering economic growth.

This autumn, Stockport will witness the opening of Stockroom, a creative, learning, and discovery center in the heart of the town.

Supported by £14.5 million from the Future High Streets Fund, Stockroom aims to be a welcoming space for families and the community at large.

With a multifaceted approach, it promises to be a vibrant center for creativity, learning, and community engagement.

New Flagship Stores and Co-Working Spaces in Stockport

Stockport’s retail scene is evolving with the arrival of new flagship stores.

The former BHS building on Merseyway will house a JD Sports flagship store and Poundland, injecting fresh energy into the retail landscape. Moreover, the Merseyway Innovation Centre, with its co-working spaces, exemplifies Stockport’s commitment to innovation and collaboration.

Mayoral Development Corporation

Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) is spearheading ambitious housing initiatives, aiming to deliver 4,000 new homes in the Town Centre by 2035. Collaborating with renowned Manchester developer Capital&Centric, the Weir Mill project will yield 253 new apartments, showcasing a harmonious blend of modern living within a refurbished Grade 2 19th Century mill building.

The Future of Stockport

Engaging the local community is paramount for Stockport’s progress. MDC, in collaboration with the English Cities Fund (ECF), is initiating community conversations on a £250 million plan to create a mixed-use neighbourhood west of Stockport town centre.

This inclusive approach invites residents to share their perspectives, fostering a sense of shared ownership in the town’s future.

Diverse Housing Solutions: A Home for Everyone

The housing landscape in Stockport is expanding with various projects underway.

Developer Cityheart is transforming the old Stockport College site into 442 new homes, with the first units expected in 2025.

Great Places Housing Group is making strides with affordable housing on the Play Centre site and King Street, contributing a total of 217 affordable homes.

Additionally, the Guinness Partnership is constructing 130 affordable homes on Edward Street, revitalising former spaces for new communities.

March 2024 marks the launch of “One Stockport: One Future,” a visionary plan building on the success of the partnership Borough Plan.

This initiative, shaped under five key themes, invites the community to actively participate in the changes that will define Stockport’s trajectory over the next 15 years. The Council Plan, aligning with this vision, outlines priorities for the next three years, reinforcing Stockport’s commitment to inclusive growth.

Cultural Celebrations: A Town Alive with Art and Festivities

Stockport’s cultural vibrancy continues to flourish as it retains its title as the Greater Manchester Town of Culture.

The town’s calendar is abuzz with upcoming dance, music, and digital arts opportunities.

Hatworks Museum, a cultural icon, will fully reopen with a new Gallery of Hats and a refreshed machinery floor in March, adding a creative dimension to Stockport’s cultural tapestry.

As the year unfolds, Stockport’s Town of Culture celebrations will culminate in a grand showcase from March 8-10, 2024. This extravaganza promises to encapsulate the essence of a year filled with creativity, innovation, and cultural richness.

A Year of Optimism and Ambition: Stockport Soars in 2024

The future of Stockport is looking brighter than ever, with a massively positive agenda for the future.

The ambitious plans and ongoing developments underscore Stockport’s commitment to becoming the best place for all residents to live happy and healthy lives.

The optimism radiating from Stockport echoes the sentiments of a town destined for greatness, poised to smash through barriers and set new benchmarks in 2024
