Steven and Nicola Cooke spent 11 years living in Sydney’s Inner West suburbs before returning home to Manchester in 2017.

After starting a mobile coffee van business just before the outbreak of COVID in 2019, they have navigated the ebbs and flows of the pandemic, forging a niche home for themselves with a coffee van named Kafeine in a community park in Heaton Moor.

Now, the pair have just opened their first coffee shop, named Inner West, in Salford – and they’re offering a special discount for customers this Tuesday 18th January to celebrate.

The deli menu includes sourdough and wholemeal toast with jam and butter, gourmet sausage rolls, cheesy vegan quesadillas, crisp bacon and egg on brioche, and fresh sandwiches and toasties, with prices starting from £2.50.

There’s also a daily selection of pastries and cakes, along with a range of Patel’s Pies including aloo matar (pea and potato), chicken vindaloo, lamb and beef keema, and chickpea, spinach and paneer (£5).

Drinks include a selection of teas and coffees along with cold drinks, and customers can also buy 250g coffee bags to take home.

The development of New Bailey and Chapel Street corridor to Salford is growing at breakneck speed, and Steven and Nicola hope the addition of a bright new coffee shop and fresh food emporium will delight local residents and city visitors alike.

They also hope that the timing of the opening will coincide with a shift towards a brighter time after economic hardship and restrictions on similar businesses due to the COVID pandemic.

“We loved our time in Sydney and a massive part of that was being able to wander out and find a welcoming little shop for a fresh coffee and pastry,” says Steven.

“We took the name of our first coffee van, Kafeine, from one of our favourite brunch destinations in Balmain, Sydney.

“With our first coffee shop we wanted to embrace the entire area where we lived, so we decided on Inner West.”

Inner West is located on Gore Street, next to Salford Central Station. It is open Mon-Fri 7.30am – 3pm, Sat and Sun 10am-3pm. To celebrate the new opening, Inner West are offering 25% off everything on Tuesday the 18th of January.
