For 25 years, LOWRY has been at the heart of Salford Quays, witnessing the transformation from an industrial area to the buzzing cultural hub we know today.
Now, as they hit this incredible milestone, they’re turning the spotlight on YOU — the people of Salford — to share your stories, heritage, and creativity.
LOWRY wins The National Lottery Heritage Fund award
Thanks to the funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund — made possible by National Lottery players — LOWRY will be launching a series of amazing community projects over the next year, making sure the voices and experiences of local people take the spotlight
One Lowry, Many Stories will gather oral history interviews, showcasing personal memories of how Salford and LOWRY have grown together. These stories will feature in a stunning art installation and photography exhibition at LOWRY in 2025 — and will also be saved in the Salford Digital Archives for future generations.
Together We Create Fund
Another big project is the Together We Create Fund, where community groups can now apply for up to £2,500 to run creative arts projects, events, or activities that celebrate Salford and LOWRY. This is an amazing opportunity to share your own take on local heritage, whether it’s through music, art, storytelling, or any creative idea you can dream up!
Applications are open now until midday on Friday, 4th April 2025 — find out how to apply by clicking here
Helen Featherstone from The National Lottery Heritage Fund says:“We are so excited to support Lowry Turns 25. It’s wonderful to see the communities of Salford at the heart of this celebration — sharing their stories and shaping the future of Salford’s incredible cultural scene.”
Paul Dennett, Salford City Mayor, shares:“LOWRY is more than a building — it’s a place where our community comes together. This funding means we can hear from the people of Salford themselves, celebrate our local heritage, and inspire future generations.”
Julia Fawcett, Chief Executive of LOWRY, adds:“We’re beyond grateful for this support. Lowry has always been about people — this is a chance to celebrate the communities that make LOWRY what it is today.”
Celebrating LS Lowry and Our Heritage
Of course, no Lowry celebration would be complete without honouring LS Lowry himself, one of Britain’s most beloved artists, famous for painting the streets and people of Salford. A special project, Lowry and his Legacy, will explore the connection between LS Lowry and local communities, with public talks, workshops, and more.
On Saturday, 26th April 2025, renowned Manchester-born author Jeanette Winterson will give a public lecture at LOWRY’S Quays Theatre, reflecting on Lowry’s impact and what his art means today.
From free family activities to community-led art projects, LOWRY’s 25th birthday is shaping up to be a celebration for everyone in Salford — and beyond!
If you’ve got a story to tell, an idea to share, or just want to join the fun — now’s the time to get involved. Let’s make this birthday one to remember!
