Sir Bobby Charlton

Manchester United and thousands of football fans from around the world have honoured Sir Bobby Charlton’s legacy with generous donations to a number of well-known charities.

Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation

Sir Bobby, who passed away in October 2023, had an enormous impact on football which was mirrored by his charitable endeavours off the pitch as he helped those in need through his own Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation and by supporting many
other worthy causes.

Charlton’s impact on the game is undeniable- famously being one member of the 1966 England team that would go on to win that year’s FIFA World Cup.

The sporting icon was also famed for his philanthropic ventures- going on to set up the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation which gives opportunities to those in developing countries the equipment and training in football.

The team at Old Trafford donated £100,000 to charities Bobby was passionate about.

His family allocated this generous donation to Sir Bobby’s aforementioned charity, Alzheimer’s Society and The Children’s Adventure Farm.

Lady Norma Charlton

An additional, £50,000 has been raised by supporters with Sir Bobby’s wife, Lady Norma Charlton saying, “On behalf of the family I want to thank everyone, not only for the donations but also the love and support they have shown following Bobby’s passing, the response has been nothing short of remarkable.

I know Bobby would be so proud of the impact the funds donated will have on so many lives – as a family we are engaged with these charities and will see firsthand the difference they will make”.

Freedom of the city of Manchester

In March 2009, Sir Bobby was awarded the ‘freedom of the city of Manchester’ and spoke about his love for the area saying- “I’m just so proud, it’s fantastic.

“It’s a great city. I have always been very proud of it”.

The money raised is a testament to the football hero’s legacy and puts his desire to make changes to the world in the spotlight.
