This March, Stockport is set to host an extraordinary event that promises to redefine how we support those living with dementia.
Dementia Disco invites you to the Dance Against Dementia fundraiser at the Stockport Masonic Guildhall on Saturday, 1st March 2025. This event is not just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of life, music, and community, designed to bring joy and connection through the universal language of dance.
A fresh take on Dementia Support
Since its launch in 2019, Dementia Disco in Heaton Mersey has carved out a unique niche in the world of dementia support. Traditional support groups, often characterised by somber atmospheres and music from eras long past, didn’t quite fit the needs of co-founders Kate and Nick. Inspired by their father’s love for 60s and 70s hits, they created Dementia Disco—a space where younger individuals with dementia could find solace in the sounds of their youth.
This innovative approach has transformed how we think about support. Here, music isn’t just background noise; it’s a therapeutic tool that triggers memories, sparks conversations, and, most importantly, gets everyone moving.
The physical benefits of dancing are well-documented, but at Dementia Disco, the emotional uplift is just as significant. It’s a place where everyone—regardless of age—can feel part of a community, united by the rhythm of the beat.
An evening to remember
The Dance Against Dementia event will be an unforgettable evening. Starting at 5 PM, guests will be treated to live performances from Roukaya B, Clint Boon, and the Viaducts, with BBC Radio 5 Live DJ Chris Warburton hosting the night. The £20 ticket includes a hot meal, ensuring that the evening is as much about comfort as it is about fun.
As the music fills the grand halls of the Stockport Masonic Guildhall, attendees will experience firsthand the joy that Dementia Disco brings. This isn’t just a night out; it’s a powerful statement of support for a community that thrives on connection and shared experiences.
More than just a disco
At its heart, Dementia Disco is about creating a supportive environment for both those living with dementia and their caregivers. The music and dancing are vital, but so too are the conversations, the shared stories, and the friendships that form on and off the dance floor.
As Dementia Disco looks to the future, plans are already in motion to expand their reach. They hope to bring the joy of dance to care homes across the region, spreading their mission of music and movement to even more people. But to do this, they need help—both in terms of volunteers and financial support.
How you can make a difference
Attending the Dance Against Dementia event is a fantastic way to show your support, but there are other ways to help too. Donations are always welcome, and the team at Dementia Disco is continually looking for volunteers to join their mission.
So why not put on your dancing shoes and join us on 1st March? Whether you’re there to dance the night away or simply to soak up the atmosphere, your presence will help make a difference. Together, we can help Dementia Disco continue to light up lives with music and movement.
