Dementia Disco in Heaton Mersey has been creating waves of positivity since its inception in 2019.

This heartwarming journey combines the universal language of music with the dedication of its founders to fostering a thriving community for those living with dementia and their families.

In an exclusive interview, we explore the remarkable story with Kate, one of the founders, as she shares insights into this transformative community

Harmonising Memories, Conversation, and Friendship

Amid the sea of dementia support initiatives, Dementia Disco stands apart.

It’s not just an event; it’s a joyful, shared experience with musical nostalgia and heartwarming connections.

The initiative takes a unique approach by harnessing the therapeutic benefits of music to kindle memories, stimulate meaningful conversations, and create lasting friendships among individuals living with dementia.

The goal is to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and comfortable.

A Personal Journey Inspires a Unique Mission

Dementia Disco’s story begins with a deeply personal journey.

Kate, co-founder and sister to Nick, embarked on this mission inspired by her family’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Their father was diagnosed at the tender age of 66, underscoring the pressing need for support that caters to a younger demographic facing dementia.

As Kate fondly remembers, the challenges they faced while seeking support for her father were profoundly impactful.

Traditional dementia support groups often centred on music from the 1940s and 1950s.

However, her father’s heart belonged to the music of the 1960s and 1970s.

This discrepancy in musical tastes and age groups provided the spark for something extraordinary.

A Gap in Existing Support Systems

The founders, Nick, Kate, and Phil, recognised a gap in the existing support system.

They were determined to create an initiative that catered to the unique needs of individuals with early-onset dementia, who were typically younger and more energetic.

The result of their dedication was the birth of Dementia Disco.

This innovative venture broke away from the traditional weekday schedule of most support groups.

Instead, it chose weekends, welcoming not only individuals living with dementia but also their family and friends.

The idea for Dementia Disco was a shared epiphany.

Both Kate and Nick were struck by the potential of using music to bridge the gap between their father’s generation and the world of dementia support.

Their first Dementia Disco event, though approached with modest expectations, drew over 40 participants and transformed into a joyous and unforgettable experience.

Crafting an Unforgettable Experience

Dementia Disco is far from your typical dementia support group.

It’s a lively, multi-generational gathering, akin to a family wedding reception.

Here, the playlist is a carefully curated selection of hits from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.

But what makes it truly unique is that attendees are encouraged to contribute to the song selections.

This personalised touch ensures that each song resonates with individual memories and sparks heartfelt conversations.

Kate passionately explains, “We want people to share connections, so, for instance, some people pick what song they had at their first dance at their wedding, or just their favourite songs, ones where people share these cherished memories.”

The power of music is undeniable, as evidenced by the inclusion of classics from Cliff Richard and Bruce Springsteen in the playlist.

These songs serve as a conduit to rekindle memories and facilitate conversations.

A Positive Impact on Well-being

The positive impact of Dementia Disco goes beyond the music.

It’s a space where attendees can share precious time with their loved ones.

The initiative has witnessed numerous heartwarming moments where attendees connect with the music and each other.

Music provides an avenue for individuals to momentarily relive cherished memories and engage in physical activity.

Dementia Disco has not only created a community of support but has also provided a space for physical activity and mental stimulation.

A Support System for Caregivers

Caregivers, too, find respite in the company of others who understand their experiences. The Dementia Disco community has become a support system, where caregivers can share experiences and find solace in the company of others who comprehend their journey.

Kate emphasizes, “The people who attend have created a lovely community where they can share tips or ideas, and just sit down and empathize with people who are going through the same thing as them.”

Expanding Horizons: The Future of Dementia Disco

Dementia Disco’s impact extends beyond their regular events.

They organise annual trips, like the popular visit to the Blackpool Tower Ballroom, which adds another layer of shared experiences and enjoyment for participants.

As Dementia Disco continues to grow, the founders are exploring options for expansion and seeking funding to support their mission.

Their vision extends to organising discos in care homes, a venture that holds promise not only in terms of its positive impact on residents but also as a potential source of revenue.

However, the realisation of this idea is hampered by the constraints of time. Kate, who is a full-time mother, dedicates her Wednesdays and Thursdays to the operation of the disco while her child is in nursery.

The hope is to secure additional funding to allow for more time and effort to be invested in this noble cause.

An Incredible Reception

The community’s reception to Dementia Disco has been overwhelmingly positive.

Family members cherish the opportunity to be out on a Saturday night with their loved ones, creating precious moments.

It provides an essential social and emotional outlet, especially on weekends when dementia-related support groups are scarce.

Looking to the Future

Dementia Disco is more than a remarkable initiative; it’s a vision of a brighter future for those living with dementia and their families.

The founders, who are already juggling their responsibilities as full-time parents, are determined to widen the reach of Dementia Disco. To achieve this, they require the invaluable support of volunteers.

A network of volunteers is integral to extending the Dementia Disco community, especially as they plan to take their discos into care homes.

Kate acknowledges that, while they are brimming with ideas, time remains a precious commodity in their busy lives.

The future of Dementia Disco is looking bright, thanks to the amazing community the team have built.

As they embark on the next chapter of their journey, the organisation’s growth holds the promise of bringing more joy, connection, and transformative moments to those affected by dementia, reminding us all of the incredible difference that love, music, and community can make in the lives of so many.
