Unlike many conventional tuition centres, Primus Education was set up by highly qualified and senior members of the teaching profession.

Waqas Javed, ‘Head of School Improvement’ working for an academies trust, and his business partner (and current senior university lecturer) Yahya Goga, who between them have over 30 years of experience teaching, set up the venture when they realised that several of their pupils were seeing outside tutors – and they were not impressed with the results.

That’s because quite often the tutors were only university students themselves, and/or non-specialists in the relevant subjects, explains Waqas – so they simply weren’t up to date with all the curriculum requirements and ongoing changes, which is absolutely key to providing the most effective tuition for your child.

“You just can’t compare that with the experience a professional teacher has,” he says, which includes explaining concepts in a variety of ways, anticipating misconceptions and an awareness of college courses.

“So when we saw this happening in our schools, we decided to do something about it.”

Primus Education has gone on to win several awards since launching in 2018 – including In 2020 (and for 2021) being selected as the top three tuition centres in Manchester by Three Best Rated; and ‘Best Children’s Tuition Centre – South Manchester’ in The UK Enterprise Award they picked up from SME News.

That success is predominantly down to the quality of the tutors they employ, says Waqas.

“All our tutors are specialist teachers, fully qualified and experienced, many working in schools at the moment and holding senior posts as well as being examiners,” he explains.

“We only hire specialist teachers who are always at the appropriate level for the classes.”

All their teachers go through a rigorous recruitment process, have to be fully DBS qualified and have outstanding references.

Primus primarily offer tuition in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science to students between the ages of 11 and 19 – but they also offer specialist tuition and support in other areas such as 11+ entrance exams and A-level courses including Accounting, Business, Economics and Law.

When it comes to sessions, they use the model of small group tuition in order to provide an optimum balance of quality first teaching, independent learning and focused group discussion.

“We like to have no more than six in a class, because you can spend some time working with individuals but also bounce ideas round the classroom,” says Waqas.

Primus focus on long-term and sustainable development as opposed to ad-hoc troubleshooting, and the tutors like to work with pupils on a long-term basis to get the very best results.

Sessions last for two hours, and in addition to the work completed at the tuition centre, your child will also receive homework in order to supplement their learning.

And the sessions can benefit all kinds of pupils – especially at a time when schools have been closed so much during the past year.

“It might be that a pupil is weaker in a particular subject because of missed learning for whatever reason, or lack of engagement, or because they’ve had a difficult time in school.

“But we also get students who are generally lacking in confidence, too. A child who perhaps might get missed in a bigger classroom, but they won’t in our smaller sessions.”

No matter what the reason for your child needing tuition, Primus Education have something suitable to offer.
