Five star establishment The Lowry Hotel is taking the next step for sustainability, as it signs up to a revolutionary recycling scheme.

The scheme, introduced by social enterprise Clean the World, focuses on recycling empty toiletry bottles and discarded soaps from hotel rooms and distributing the recycled products to those who desperately need them.

Through this, Clean the World are able to prevent millions of hygiene-related illnesses each year.

The Lowry Hotel will be shipping all of its half-used soaps – estimated at approximately 50,000 a year – to a recycling centre in Amsterdam. The soap is thoroughly sanitised and then ground into tiny soap ‘noodles’, before being pressed and cut into brand new bars.

These bars are then sent to charities across the globe to be delivered to people in need.

The Lowry Hotel’s partnership with Clean the World – global leader in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as well as sustainability – puts the hotel one step closer to sustainable living, meaning their guests can sleep peacefully knowing they’re in good, green hands.

The hotel has also vouched to send empty toiletry bottles, such as shampoo and body wash, to a special recycling plant to avoid contributing to plastic pollution in landfill sites.

The Lowry Hotel is one of the first hotels in the UK to sign up to the programme, making a promise to recycle over 50,000 soap products each year.

But this isn’t the first step it has taken to become more sustainable, for the hotel has recently switched to using purely sustainability-sourced produce in its restaurant, and also introducing a new ‘eco turndown’ option for guests, to reduce its carbon footprint.

The eco turndown offers a more relaxed service to guests, whilst also moving away from outdated and un-environmentally friendly cleaning services.

“Sustainability is something that is hugely important to us as a business and we are constantly looking for new ways to do our part in helping the environment, and the Clean the World program is a fantastic opportunity for us to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Adrian Ellis, general manager of The Lowry Hotel.

“Whilst many of us love the novelty of miniature toiletries when we stay in hotel rooms, they are one of the biggest causes of waste in the industry, with hundreds of soaps and bottles a day being thrown away half-used.

“The scheme stops these toiletries from ending up in landfill and we’re thrilled to be involved.
