When it comes to getting fit, there’s some truth in the saying ‘there’s strength in numbers’.
Whether it’s finishing that last set of squats when you see those around you powering through or pushing yourself to move away from the variation and try a new pose in your yoga class, there’s something about a communal workout that makes us try that little bit harder.
In fact, recent research findings suggest we are heavily influenced by the healthy choices of those around us.
Adopting a tribe mentality when it comes to fitness has been proven to have many benefits on our health.
There are so many reasons to give group training a go – from positive peer pressure, which has been shown to increase commitment to a routine and workout consistency, to helping to find support and accountability in being part of a team – and even giving a mental boost through the companionship it provides.
Whilst not exactly a new concept, group fitness seems to be having a moment right now. And here in Manchester, there’s a fitness brand leading the way.
Founded by NHS doctor Dr Jessicarr Moorhouse, a personal trainer with a background in physiotherapy who leads weekly group training sessions herself, TRIBE.MCR encourages you to not just make the most out of your workout but to have fun whilst you’re at it.
Combining years of clinical experience and a firm scientific knowledge with a passion for movement, her group training regimes are evidence-based and tailored to your individual needs.
Factoring in mental and social benefits as well as the physical ones, Jessicarr has created a group training regime that promotes a holistic attitude to health and wellness by helping you build new social connections as well as building up your physical strength.
Classes start with a thorough warm-up to make sure your cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems are ready to exercise – something that is very important in cold weather.
Exercises include a mix of boxing in pairs (great for stress relief), circuits allowing everyone to do their own thing and go at their own pace, and fun team games and races which the whole group gets involved in.
With all that fresh air and the fun, you won’t even realise how hard you are working.
Taking place in the city centre and in south Manchester every week, sessions cost £7 per session plus booking fees on Eventbrite, and less if you book directly with TRIBE.MCR – an absolute steal for what is an exhilarating, safe and personally tailored workout.
If you’re a town bird, we recommend checking out the Sadler’s Yard sessions on Hanover Street at 6.30pm every Wednesday evening.
With lighting and on-site security, Sadler’s Yard transforms into an urban playground for the sessions where Jessicarr will have you running up steps, using battle ropes and jumping on benches and lots of playful, imaginative and exciting exercises you wouldn’t do in the gym.
If you find getting on the treadmill a chore, this might just be the change you need to shake up your exercise routine.
Jessicarr sets the atmosphere with upbeat dance music, so you’ll want to keep going right to the end with the camaraderie of the group to spur you on.
South Manchester sessions take place every Saturday morning at 10.30am in the beautiful, gated Marie Louise Gardens.
Its interesting layout of winding paths, benches, and steps is used to help you to connect with your environment as you get stuck into your workout. Dogs are welcome, so you can bring your pooch along for that extra bit of moral support if you feel it’s needed.
All classes are currently bookable via Eventbrite on a pay-as-you-go system costing just £7 plus booking fees each – with the option to book block sessions directly with five available for £32 and ten for £60.
This month Jessicarr has also launched a series of smaller group training sessions, accommodating a maximum of three people at a time.
The idea is that, for anyone just dipping their toe in the water, there’s an opportunity to get to grips with moving safely and build up your confidence so you can start having fun with your exercise. Spaces are limited here so if it’s of interest, we suggest getting in touch sooner rather than later to avoid missing out.
Give group training a go. It could be just what you need to shake yourself out of your exercise rut.
