Areas ‘astonishing’ transformation will include Manchester’s first Lido in decades

New images have been shared of what could become Manchester’s first lido to open in decades.
Council chiefs are expected to approve plans to begin redeveloping Holt Town — a 30-hectare area sandwiched between Ancoats, New Islington, and the Etihad where fewer than 100 people live — on Wednesday (January 22nd).
A Lido in Holt Town
They hope to transform the area, largely comprising light industrial buildings, into a 4,500-home ‘green new town’ in the city, centered around its existing Metrolink station. There are also plans for a 300-capacity ‘cultural hub’ to become Hope Mill theatre’s new home, and 15 acres of green space — including ‘confluence park’, to be built around the River Medlock.
But Holt Town is also set to have a unique feature: A lido.
Cyrus Street
New documents reveal the lido would be placed on Cyrus Street, a barriered-off overgrown back road which connects Cavalier Street to Cambrian Street.
The images were published in the council’s neighbourhood development framework, effectively the blueprint for the project which ‘will take many years to complete’, the document said.

Ahead of the council’s executive signing off on the blueprint, leader Bev Craig said: “Holt Town has huge potential and this is feeding our ambition to create a brand new woodland town – the first of its kind in Manchester.
“We have an opportunity to deliver a transformative programme of investment and we expect this area to be Manchester’s next urban regeneration exemplar, creating a neighbourhood that meets the needs of our city and our people – with at least 4,500 new homes, including significant affordable housing options.
“Following consultation, we are beginning to move to the early delivery phase for Holt Town – a new town within the city of Manchester – that will finally bridge the gap between the city centre, Sportcity and the Etihad Campus in east Manchester.”
Holt Town’s future will be discussed at Manchester council’s executive committee at 2pm on Wednesday, January 22.
