Milltown Sound Chorus

The Milltown Sound Chorus, a dedicated barbershop choir of 30 women aged 14 to 80, has secured a coveted spot at the Harmony Classic competition in Columbus, Ohio. This international stage is the pinnacle of barbershop harmony, and it represents a dream come true for the chorus—but they need your help to get there.

“We’re just a local choir, but we’re part of a global organisation called Sweet Adelines International,” explained Stella Macpherson, a member of Milltown Sound. “It’s based in America, and it promotes a cappella singing in four-part harmony. There’s no backing music; it’s just pure voices creating the music. It’s challenging, but that’s what makes it so rewarding.”

The Milltown Sound Chorus qualified for the Harmony Classic after achieving their highest-ever score of 590 points at the UK regional competition in May. This monumental achievement also earned them the “Most Improved Chorus” award, solidifying their status as a group to watch on the international stage.

The Milltown Sound Chorus

Competing at this level is no small feat. The Harmony Classic is for the top five scoring choirs with up to 30 members worldwide, and qualifying is a rare honour. But for Milltown Sound, the journey has always been about more than competition. “We formed in 2009 with just 17 members,” recalled Stella. “Back then, we didn’t expect to win anything. We were just a group of friends who loved singing. But over time, we grew and set our sights on competing internationally.”

This October, they’ll finally have the chance to represent not just Wigan, but the UK, on an international stage. However, the financial demands of the trip are significant. As a non-profit organisation, Milltown Sound relies on monthly subscriptions from its members to cover essentials like rehearsal space, sheet music, and copyright licenses. Travelling to Ohio, along with entry fees, costumes, and coaching, requires an additional £14,500—a daunting sum for the small but determined group.

“Our monthly fees cover the basics, but they don’t leave room for extras,” explained Stella. “To compete at this level, we need professional coaching to fine-tune our harmonies and perfect our performance. We also need costumes because this isn’t just about singing; it’s about delivering a full entertainment package. Every detail matters, from the choreography to the visual presentation.”

A community effort

To raise the necessary funds, the choir has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign. “We’re not just asking for donations,” Stella emphasised. “We’re hosting events where people can come together and enjoy themselves. For example, we have a Murder Mystery night, stand-up comedians, and a crazy bingo night in the pipeline this year, as well as our own show in the spring. We also have a lottery draw coming up in February, which gives participants 10 chances to win a cash prize while supporting us.”

The group’s fundraising efforts extend beyond events. They’re also walking from Wigan to Ohio and seeking support through their JustGiving page and social media platforms. “Every little bit helps,” says Stella. “Whether it’s attending an event, donating online, or simply sharing our story, it all makes a difference.”

A choir that brings people together

One of the most remarkable aspects of Milltown Sound is its inclusivity. The choir welcomes members of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. “Our youngest member is 14, and our oldest is 80,” Stella shared proudly. “It’s such a great community group where everyone is accepted. People from all walks of life come together, have fun, and enjoy singing. For us, the competition is just an added bonus. It’s really about bringing people together.”

This sense of community extends beyond the choir. Milltown Sound frequently performs at care homes, weddings, and local events, often free of charge. “It’s our way of giving back,” said Stella. “Singing for people brings so much joy, and we love being able to share that.”

Representing the UK

For the members of Milltown Sound, the opportunity to compete in Ohio is about more than personal achievement. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent Wigan and the UK on an international stage,” Stella explains. “It’s not just about us; it’s about putting our town on the map and showing the world what we can do.”

The competition itself will bring together thousands of singers from across the globe. The previous international contest in Louisville saw participation from over 21,000 choir members and staff. This year’s event promises to be just as grand, and Milltown Sound is determined to make its mark.

“When you think about it, we’re sharing the stage with choirs from America with over 100 members,” Stella said. “For a small choir like ours to even qualify is an incredible achievement. But we’re not going there to participate; we’re going to give it our all and hopefully bring home a win in our category.”
