Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has joined the ranks of co-owners at FC United of Manchester, the supporter-owned club based in Moston.
In a video shared on the club’s X account, the former French international revealed that he and his family have taken ownership of the Northern Premier League club, which operates under a unique model where members hold the power to make key decisions.
Eric Cantona buys stake in FC United of Manchester
Founded in 2005 by disillusioned Manchester United supporters, FC United was a response to the controversial takeover of the Old Trafford club by American businessman Malcolm Glazer.
The new owners of FC United are a diverse community of over 2,000 members who believe in a different way of running football clubs, prioritising the interests of fans and local communities over profits.
Cantona, known for his four Premier League titles and legendary antics with Manchester United, shared his excitement about joining the club, calling FC United’s history “young” but already “great.”
“We are a great club”
He also encouraged others to become members, saying, “People around the world should join FC United as a member because we are a great club.”
The club’s ownership model stands in stark contrast to many professional football teams, with FC United operating on a “one member, one vote” basis.
This means supporters have a direct say in decisions such as electing the board, setting ticket prices, and even the design of the club’s shirts. For just £25, adult members can gain an equal stake in the club’s future.
A spokesperson for FC United welcomed Cantona and his family to the club, emphasising the values that have guided the club since its inception: fairness, inclusivity, and community.
A FC United of Manchester spokesman said: “We’re delighted to welcome Eric and his family as our latest co-owners, joining over 2,000 other FC United fans who believe there’s a better way for football – where clubs are run with the interests of supporters and local communities at the heart of everything they do.
“Eric said he joined us because we’re a club that does things differently – driven by fairness, inclusivity, and a commitment to putting people before profit.
“While our history is short, it’s something we’re already incredibly proud of – built by fans, for fans.”
“Built by fans, for fans”
Cantona’s decision to become involved with FC United comes as he continues to pursue creative ventures outside of football.
Apart from his successful football career, Cantona is an actor, artist, and musician, with a notable UK music tour and involvement in the “From Moss Side to Marseille” art project.

The superstar was also seen earlier this year at GRIT studios in Manchester, where he was supporting local artists making their way in the world.
This summer, he will also be featured in the Football City Art United exhibition, held during the Manchester International Festival, which explores the impact of fame on footballers.
Since retiring from football in 1997, Cantona has remained a significant figure in the world of sport and culture, and his latest venture into the world of fan-owned football teams marks a unique chapter in his ongoing connection with Manchester.
