The authentic new Italian pizza place hidden under an Altrincham viaduct

This hidden new pizzeria serves authentic pizzas using special Italian ingredients - including a unique vegan menu

Located off the beaten track under a railway arch on Viaduct Road in Altrincham, Bianco Pizza opened just a few weeks ago and specialises in unique vegan pizza made the Italian way.

Originally from a small town in Italy called Benevento, Italian patron Giovanni D’Andrea opened his first food and beverage business just down the road in Sale in 2013 after moving to the UK. Serving Italian-style coffee as a joint venture, he realised drinks weren’t enough and he wanted to bring a broader taste of his homeland to Greater Manchester so he started serving great pizza.

Giovanni started his career as an engineer servicing pizza ovens before actually using the ovens. “Baking pizza is a science,” says Giovanni. “As an engineer it was very easy for me to learn all the technical and physical processes inside the [pizza] dough. And I’m not showing off when I say I’m the only person in the UK who can repair the equipment and also use the equipment to make top quality pizza.”

With prices ranging from £6.40 up to £10.50, Bianco is incredibly good value for money when compared with some of the trendy restaurants in the area.

Noteworthy hand-stretched pizzas on the menu are Garlic & Pepperoni with Bianco special homemade garlic cream, mozzarella and spicy pepperoni; Asparagus & Pesto with mozzarella, tomato, pesto and asparagus; Friarielli & Nduja with that creamy Bianco special garlic sauce, mozzarella, friarielli and nduja sausage; and Hot Dogs & Fries with mozzarella, tomato, frankfurter and, you guessed it, fries.

Bianco serves up a lot more vegan variety than your average local pizzeria.

Friarielli and Garlic is their signature vegan pizza with a special garlic cream and a leafy green Italian ingredient called friarielli – which is “like a wild broccoli found only in the Campania region.” It’s slightly bitter, nutty and combined with garlic and olive oil is an authentic little slice of Naples.

Other vegan pizzas include Tomato and Oregano; Pineapple; Capers and Olives; Peppers and Garlic; Spicy Red with chilli peppers and roasted peppers; and Veggie with aubergine, courgette and roasted peppers; and Spicy White with that special garlic cream, courgettes, aubergines and spicy chilli peppers.
