Sausage, chips, mushy peas and curry sauce on a pizza: takeaway dream or nightmare?

Ah, the age old Friday night takeaway dilemma. Chippy tea or pizza? Both classics.

Households around the UK indulge in the tradition of a ‘chippy tea’ on a regular basis, and it’s a Manc favourite. But combining it with pizza? It’s an idea that could only have come from Crazy Pedro’s.

Think proper chip shop chips, succulent sausage, lashings of mushy peas and curry sauce. On a pizza.

The ‘Chippy Tea’ pizza is the stuff of comfort food dreams. Or possibly nightmares, depending on your thoughts about a vivid-green mushy pea base.

It’s not the first time Crazy Pedro’s have combined our favourite dishes on a pizza.

Their ‘Dirty Northerner’ hit the headlines in 2016 with its outrageous chips, cheese and gravy topping, while the ‘Off Ya Noodle’ was the talk of Manchester thanks to its Pot Noodle topping.

‘Dreggs’, which took inspiration from the high street bakery, was a concoction of sausage rolls, mozzarella, baked beans and brown sauce.

‘Back 2 School’, meanwhile, was a nostalgic blend of turkey dinosaurs, potato smiles and spaghetti hoops – all on a pizza base.

Last Christmas, they put turkey, pigs in blankets, sage and onion stuffing, honey roasted parsnips and cranberry sauce on a pizza for the ultimate Christmas feast.

One Easter a couple of years back they created a sweet pizza, ‘I Am The Resurreggtion’, topped with chocolate sauce, marshmallows, brownie pieces, meringue and a creme egg.

And earlier this year, their May special ‘I Don’t Like Cricket, I Love It’ pizza featured crispy fried shallots, mozzarella, lime, sriracha, coriander and a healthy dose of fried crickets.

“We’ve done some pretty outrageous stuff so far but this one has taken it up a notch,” said Crazy Pedro’s director Lyndon Higginson of the cricket pizza, which some likened to a Bushtucker Trial.

“There are some amazing flavours to be found if you broaden your horizons a little. We’ve always taken inspiration from international recipes, so why not try a delicacy this time?”

We expect nothing less than outrageous innovation from Crazy Pedro’s. But are their legendary mash-ups more than just gimmicks?

“We’d never want to be ‘just another pizza place’ and hope our customers are open to trying something new and stepping out of their comfort zone,” said Lyndon.

So what about mushy peas, chips and curry sauce on a pizza. Is it the perfect fusion of our two top takeaways or a step too far?

You can try the ‘Chippy Tea’ at Crazy Pedro’s all September. It’s available to eat in or take out, by the slice or as a whole pizza.
