These top weekend events in Manchester will have you ushering in February and saying goodbye to those January blues. Whether you fancy celebrating Saturday with Strictly or seeing in Super Bowl Sunday, you’re bound to find an event or two that strike your fancy.
Start the month off right – in no particular order, here’s our picks for the top events this weekend…
Off Beat: Jeff Nuttall and the International Underground
Painter, poet, actor and sculptor, Jeff Nutall (1933-2004) was central to the Beat movement and one of the few people in the early 1960s daring enough to publish William S. Burroughs’ most experimental writing. His own book Bomb Culture was so influential that it was discussed in Parliament. Head down to The John Rylands Library to kick start the weekend with a whirlwind of poetic creativity from one of the most iconic artistic revolutionaries. His work might even spark your own literary mind alight. Not suitable for children. Free.

Strictly Come Dancing Tour
If you reserve your Saturday nights for re-runs of Tess and Claudia and a ton of cha cha cha, then you’re in luck. The Strictly tour is hitting the stage in our city this weekend and bringing all of the best moves with it. They’re kicking off February in style with punchy (if a little cheesy) jokes, snazzy dance routines and plenty of weekend razzle-dazzle. Celebs will be battling it out for the judge’s votes but also to win votes from the arena audience. This high energy dance-off is set to be electric so the night’s bound to get a ten from Len.
FC United’s Big European Weekend of Football, Beer and Music
Football, beer and music. It’s some people’s idea of the perfect weekend. And you can enjoy them all in the same place this weekend – Broadhurst Park, the home of FC United of Manchester. They’re playing SV Austria Salzburg, another supporter-owned club, in a friendly on Saturday, February 4 with pre-match entertainment courtesy of Space Monkeys, the last band to sign for Factory Records. The icing on the cake is the club’s annual beer festival offering more than 20 ales and ciders from local breweries, plus Essenburger Austrian lager in honour of the visitors.
