Hairspray

Hairspray is an electrifying show that effortlessly combines infectious joy with a profound message, all delivered through brilliant music and captivating performances.

As a long-time fan of the film, I eagerly returned for a second viewing of the live production, and it was every bit as enchanting as the first.

Hairspray at Palace Theatre

The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as the big red curtain remained down, concealing the set and heightening the sense of mystery.

When the lights dimmed, Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby, our effervescent Tracy, took to the stage to introduce the show and remind the audience about the phone policy.

Then, as the opening notes of “Good Morning Baltimore” filled the theatre, it was clear we were about to embark on an extraordinary journey.

Michelle Ndegwa’s stunning performance

A personal highlight of the show was Michelle Ndegwa’s stunning performance as Motormouth Maybelle.

Her rendition of “I Know Where I’ve Been” was profoundly moving, resonating deeply with me and many others in the audience.

Her powerful voice and emotional delivery brought tears to my eyes, and she received a roaring ovation even before the song concluded.

Ndegwa held herself with a perfect blend of grace and attitude, embodying the essence of Motormouth Maybelle.

Remarkably, this performance marked her debut in the role.

After the show, I had the pleasure of speaking with her, and she shared the inspiring story of how she landed the part.

Her gratitude for the support she received was palpable, and she graciously spent ten minutes conversing with us.

Michelle Ndegwa’s passion for the production was evident in every word and gesture.

She was not only a remarkable performer but also a genuinely lovely person who truly loves what she does.

The debut of Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby

This production also marked the debut of Alexandra Emmerson-Kirby as the spirited Tracy Turnblad.

From the moment she opened the show with “Good Morning Baltimore,” her infectious energy and spectacular voice filled every corner of the theatre, instantly lifting the audience’s spirits.

Kirby’s portrayal of Tracy’s obsession with Link Larkin was charming and spot-on, capturing the character’s essence perfectly.

The entire performance ran seamlessly, with a well-paced flow that never felt rushed. By the end, I found myself wishing it could continue indefinitely.

Stunning set designs

The sets were a visual feast, bursting with colour and sparkle, thanks to the visionary work of Takis.

The design was not only stunning but also practical, allowing the actors to effortlessly move and remove set pieces as needed, showcasing the thoughtful planning behind the scenes.

The songs are incredible and the sets for them are also incredible. My favourite one was I can Hear the Bells.

The whole cast freeze up and turn into mannequins and the stillness of their bodies are unbelievable and they truly do look like mannequins.

Drew Mconie is to applaud for their incredible work and guidance throughout the show.
