A nostalgic Blockbuster video themed bar has opened in the NQ

The walls are donned with video cassettes at Blockbusters NQ - but it's not so much a streaming service as a 'get you steaming' service

If you’re a certain age, you’ll probably have fond memories of browsing the shelves in Blockbuster, trying to agree on a film for the night.

And then, more often as not, racing back to return it the next day to avoid incurring a fine.

Now, in the streaming age, the video rental shops are long gone from the high street, but a new Northern Quarter bar thinks it’s time to bring it back – after a fashion.

“Back in the day Blockbuster was everywhere,” say Oldham Street bar Blockbusters NQ.

“We miss it and we think it’s about time the brand made a return – one where you can drink, and the only returns here are for another hit of fun and nostalgia.”

Split over two floors, the bar, which was founded by Stewart Dean – owner of the Northern Quarter’s South African bar and restaurant Chakalaka across the road – is decked out in that familiar cobalt blue and yellow colour scheme for an instant hit of nostalgia.

Downstairs, black walls and velvet chairs lend a suitably cinematic feel.

The bar features video cassettes and old movie posters lining the walls, with TVs playing a selection of cult classics.

There’s even a secret “naughty films” section tucked away behind a curtain.

A modern list of cocktails includes the ‘VHS Presso Martini’, a popcorn-inspired ‘Alcopop-corn’, and the ‘PG&T’ –  a G&T with a pomegranate twist.

You’ll even find beef burger and roast chicken flavoured popcorn, if you’re craving a film-themed snack.

“Blockbusters NQ is not the best ‘streaming’ service, but we are the best ‘get you steaming’ service,” they say.

“We have a modern list of cocktails and a casual and friendly atmosphere.

“We are here to stay well into the future so be kind and rewind with us.”

Blockbusters NQ is open now at 60 Oldham Street, M4 1LE.  Opening hours are Thursday 5pm-3am, Friday 5pm-3am, and Saturday and Sunday 4pm-3am. It’s closed Monday – Wednesday.
