A brand new bakery with stunning rainbow cakes and other tasty treats has opened on Deansgate Mews just in time for Manchester Pride.

From delicately iced cupcakes and gooey slabs of brownie, to elaborate occasion cakes, rocky roads and even chocolate lollipops, you’ll find it all at Alex’s Bakery, the latest addition to the Great Northern’s independent business hub.

There are even special Pride chocolate lollipops and rainbow rocky roads, and a host of cupcakes topped with mini jammy dodgers and kinder buenos starting from just £2.

The new opening is the brainchild of Brazilian-born baker Alex Furlan, who first started selling her cakes at Bury market in 2014.

She was a firm fixture at the hugely popular market with her charming cupcakes. But, after being spotted and approached by a senior Director at Debenhams, she made the move to the Trafford Centre to open her first concession store.

And now she’s opened up on Deansgate Mews, a semi-hidden strip you’ll find at the back of the Great Northern Warehouse, parallel to Deansgate.

“It has always been my dream to open my very own bakery, but I wasn’t sure if it would ever be possible,” said Alex.

“I started baking as a hobby for my family and friends until even friends of friends were asking for my cakes! We are absolutely thrilled that we have now found the perfect spot at the Great Northern and I can’t wait to open to the public and bake my favourite cakes from a place of my own.

“I have finally found my passion and every single cake or cupcake that I bake, I make with such pleasure and love, that I couldn’t even call it a job.”

The new bakery joins award-winning artisanal neighbours Dormouse Chocolates, Lion’s Den bar, Polish eatery Platzki and the upcoming Holy Grain on the Mews, one of Manchester’s best-kept secrets.

Head down to sample sumptuous sponges, gooey slabs of brownie and delicately iced cupcakes at the chic new independent cakery.

Centre Director for Great Northern, Mark Schofield, said: “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Alex to Deansgate Mews. Alex’s Bakery is the perfect addition to our growing row of independent businesses and I know that it’s going to quickly become a must-stop destination for any visitor to the Great Northern Warehouse.”
