Christmas Markets zippy Santa

Manchester’s biggest festive resident has arrived in Albert Square for the eleventh year running in what could be his final appearance there for some time.

The six-tonne Santa is lit by 100,000 low energy LED lights and has become an icon of the city’s festive season. He is the latest in a long line of over-sized Santas to adorn the Town Hall.

He will be lifted into place on Wednesday 31st October, but his lights will remain off until the official start to the festive season at the Manchester Christmas Lights Switch-on on Saturday, 3rd November.

But it will be necessary to find him a new home whilst the Town Hall is being refurbished – and that will need need some careful planning because of his huge size and weight. The city council are currently investigating alternative locations for the city’s favourite festive mascot – and they are open to suggestions.

Santa will be back on twitter again this year getting involved in all of the Christmas conversation. Follow him @MCRSanta and keep up with all the festive news. And stay up to date on twitter with #MCRCHRISTMAS
