On Monday afternoon, Manchester Cathedral was filled with members of the Manchester United family who gathered to celebrate the extraordinary life of Kath Phipps, a woman whose dedication to the club spanned over half a century.
The passing of United’s long-serving receptionist in December prompted an outpouring of tributes from players, staff, and fans alike, all of whom were touched by her warmth and devotion.
Kath Phipps
Kath began her journey with Manchester United in 1968 as a switchboard operator.
Over time, she became a familiar face at the Old Trafford directors’ box entrance before eventually settling into her role as the receptionist at Carrington.
Known for her radiant smile and kind heart, Kath made everyone who crossed her path feel welcome and valued.
A farewell among legends
The funeral service, held at Manchester Cathedral, was attended by club greats from every era.
Sir Alex Ferguson, who shared a close bond with Kath throughout his managerial career, delivered the eulogy.
Reflecting on their decades-long friendship, Sir Alex recounted how Kath not only excelled in her role but also embodied the very spirit of the club.
“She was a remarkable person,” he said. “She gave everything to Manchester United, and everyone who met her felt her warmth. Even in her final days, she remained focused on helping others.”
Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad was present, alongside Academy representatives and United Women’s manager Marc Skinner, captain Maya Le Tissier, and Ella Toone.
Defender Jonny Evans, who knew Kath since his youth days, gave a heartfelt reading in her honour.
Club legends including David Beckham, Roy Keane, Denis Irwin and Mark Hughes also paid their respects, with Beckham having visited Kath in her final days to say goodbye.
A lifelong connection to Manchester United
For many, Kath was more than a receptionist—she was a confidant, a friend, and the glue that held the Manchester United family together. Former captain Bryan Robson recalled how she managed his mail for decades, describing her as “fabulous” and always reliable.
Peter Schmeichel shared his first encounter with Kath years before joining United.
Visiting Old Trafford as a young fan, she arranged for him to see the stadium, even though she had no idea who he was. It was a moment of kindness he never forgot.
Legendary kitman Albert Morgan added a deeply personal tribute, highlighting Kath’s unwavering dedication.
“Even when she was unwell, she was sorting players’ mail from her hospital bed,” he said. “That’s just who she was—always thinking of others and finding ways to help.”
Kath’s influence extended far beyond her daily duties. When Sir Alex’s wife, Cathy, was hospitalised shortly after the family moved south from Aberdeen, Kath immediately offered to spend time with her, even though they had never met.
Sir Alex described this gesture as the epitome of Kath’s selflessness.
A legacy of love and dedication
Kath’s commitment to United was matched only by her love for the people within the club. During the lockdown, staff regularly checked in on her, and players made home visits to ensure she felt supported.
Her kindness was reciprocated by the club, with Sir Alex arranging daily taxis to and from Carrington when Kath’s husband, Richard, passed away.
Despite the immense challenges she faced in her personal life, including being left without close family after Richard’s passing, Kath remained a source of positivity and strength for those around her.
She lived for her work at United, continuing to greet players and staff with the same warmth and enthusiasm until her final days.
A celebration of life
Monday’s service was a celebration of Kath’s remarkable life and the indelible impact she left on Manchester United. The tributes poured in from all corners of the club, from Sir Alex’s heartfelt eulogy to Jonny Evans’ recollection of driving her home and feeling like he was chauffeuring royalty.
The congregation included not only star players but also the “ordinary” people of United—the staff, colleagues, and friends who worked alongside Kath for decades.
Many of these individuals have since left the club, but they returned on this day to honour the woman who brought warmth and humanity to every role she held.
Remembering our Kath
As Sir Alex concluded his tribute, he spoke of Kath’s enduring legacy: “She was the heart of Manchester United. Today is not just a reflection of her life but a reminder of how much she meant to us all.”
Kath Phipps was more than an employee; she was the soul of Manchester United, a shining example of loyalty, kindness, and dedication. Her passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by everyone who knew her, but her memory will continue to inspire generations to come.
