The primary objective of this collection drive is to raise critical funds to provide life-saving aid to the survivors of the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8th.

This charitable initiative is anticipated to become the largest Friday Mosque collection in the organisation’s history.

Mosques Joining the Cause in the North West

Several prominent Mosques in the North West region and Manchester have pledged their support by participating in this noble cause.

These Mosques will host collections on various dates in September to contribute to the relief efforts in Morocco.

The Mosques participating in this initiative include:

  1. Cheadle Muslim Association (Manchester) – Collection on September 15th
  2. Alfurqan (Manchester) – Collections on September 9th and 10th
  3. Altrincham Mosque (Manchester) – Collection on September 15th
  4. Salaam Community (Manchester) – Collection on September 20th
  5. City Mosque Preston – Collection on September 15th
  6. City Mosque (Manchester) – Collection on September 22nd

These Mosques are uniting to make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by the tragic earthquake.

Speaking to I Love Manchester, Imam Abid Khan, Cheadle Mosque, said

“The devastating earthquake which struck Morocco and the floods in Libya has very sadly resulted in over 9,000 deaths.

“When news of the tragedies broke, we at Cheadle Masjid launched emergency appeals with Islamic Relief to raise much needed funds for those affected by the disasters.

“As Muslims, we believe we have a religious and moral duty to support those in need. It has been heartwarming to see the response of the community and the deep desire many have shown to help in any way they can.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all those impacted.”

 Morocco Earthquake: A Catastrophic Disaster

The earthquake, which struck Morocco on September 8th at 11:11 PM local time, wreaked havoc in the High Atlas region.

As of now, the reported death toll stands at a staggering 2,100 lives lost.

Unfortunately, this number is expected to rise as search and rescue teams continue their tireless efforts to locate survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

In the aftermath of this disaster, numerous villages have been reduced to rubble, leaving residents desperate to assist their neighbours.

Blocked roads are hindering the arrival of ambulances to provide much-needed medical aid.

Meanwhile, officials are working tirelessly to clear debris, but the challenging mountainous terrain, the looming risk of landslides, and considerable distances pose formidable obstacles to rescue and relief efforts.

Islamic Relief’s Ground Team Takes Action

Islamic Relief UK has swiftly mobilized its team on the ground, collaborating with local organizations to deliver vital relief to survivors.

This assistance includes provisions such as food, shelter, and essential items to help those affected rebuild their lives.

In response to the urgent need for aid, Islamic Relief has also launched an appeal with an ambitious goal of raising £10 million to support the ongoing relief efforts in Morocco.

Tufail Hussain, Director of Islamic Relief UK, expressed his deep concern, saying, “The news of the earthquake in Morocco was devastating to hear, knowing that so many lives would be lost or ruined by this natural disaster.

“Islamic Relief teams were quickly deployed to Morocco to work with local partners.”

He further emphasized the vital role that communities and donors play in facilitating these humanitarian efforts, stating, “However, none of what we do in the field would be possible without the amazing generosity of our donors and the community.

“In times of crisis, you can always count on the Muslim community to pull together to help the less fortunate.”
