In Moston, a charity initiative called the Coalition of Kindness is making a remarkable difference in their community.

Spearheaded by Vinny Thompson, a community stalwart with over 20 years of experience in the charity sector, this group are all about the power of compassion and collective action.

From Humble Beginnings to Community Hero

Vinny Thompson’s journey began long before the Coalition of Kindness was formed.

With two decades of dedication to community service, his commitment to helping others was recognised when he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Honours list for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 68-year-old earned Royal recognition for his work serving and helping the community in Greater Manchester, largely through running a food hub at non-league football club FC United of Manchester.

That has seen him help hundreds of families in Tameside and the surrounding area both before and during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite parting ways with FC United, Vinny’s mission was far from over.

The local school next door to the ground approached him, asking if he could extend his efforts to their families, and thus, the Coalition of Kindness was born.

Vinny has been working there ever since.

A lifeline for diverse needs

Coalition of Kindness

Operating as a Community Interest Company (CIC) for almost three years now, the Coalition of Kindness has become a crucial lifeline for those in need across Manchester.

The charity assists a wide array of individuals, including those facing homelessness, victims of domestic violence (both male and female), refugees, and even people struggling to make ends meet despite being employed.

“There’s always been a need, and that need has increased more and more,” Vinny explained.

The rise in demand has brought people from unexpected demographics, such as students and the elderly, into the fold, highlighting the widening scope of social issues in the community.

Vinny describes the range of needs as a “smorgasbord,” addressing everything from homelessness to domestic violence, to families who are working but still can’t keep their heads above water.

Innovative solutions for immediate needs

The Coalition of Kindness primarily focuses on providing food, a fundamental necessity that often opens the door to understanding deeper issues.

Vinny describes how food acts as a gateway: “People won’t tell you their problems, but they’ll tell you they’re hungry. It opens doors for people to discuss their problems.”

From there, the charity offers comprehensive support, including housing assistance, debt management, and healthier eating advice.

A significant part of their strategy involves collaboration with other groups, embodying the coalition’s name.

“We work with lots of other groups across the whole of Manchester,” Vinny says, emphasising the importance of unity in tackling these issues.

Partnerships with organisations like Two Brews, Street Treats, and FareShare amplify their impact, ensuring that resources reach those who need them most. They provide food and signpost people to housing, debt management, and healthier eating services, offering a holistic approach to support.

Success stories and future aspirations

The Coalition of Kindness prides itself on creating lasting positive change.

One success story involves a domestic violence survivor who, through the charity’s support, has transformed her life, securing a good job and stability.

“She’s like my FA Cup medal,” Vinny shares, underscoring the personal triumphs that drive his passion.

Looking ahead, Vinny aims to continue fostering collaboration among various groups to maximise their collective impact.

“Your unity is strength,” he states, advocating for a more integrated approach to community support.

Their reach extends far beyond Moston to areas like Rochdale and Accrington, wherever help is needed.
