The much-anticipated live entertainment arena Co-Op Live reached a significant milestone yesterday as it celebrated its topping out ceremony, marking the completion of the roof construction.

The event was attended by guests, venue stakeholders, construction teams, and subcontractors, all of whom had the privilege of leaving their mark on the venue by signing the final acoustically treated roof cassette.

Co-Op Live

Seriously impressive inside

The ceremony commenced with a keynote address by Tim Leiweke, CEO of Oak View Group, the joint-venture partner behind Co-op Live.

Joined by speakers including Ferran Soriano, CEO of City Football Group, Amanda Jennings, Director of Marketing Communications at Co-op, and James Wimpenny, Executive Director of BAM Construct UK, the event showcased the positive impact this landmark venue will have on both local and national communities.

Co-op Live job opportunities

One of the major highlights of the occasion was the acknowledgement of the tremendous job opportunities generated by the construction of Co-op Live.

Over 3,350 jobs have been created thus far, with an additional 2,000 roles set to be filled before the venue officially opens its doors.

The speakers emphasised the unique partnership between Co-op and Oak View Group, underscoring the integration across Co-op’s business and the benefits it will provide to its Members and Co-op food innovation.

Manchester is a world-class musical destination

Tim Leiweke expressed his confidence in Co-op Live’s potential to elevate Manchester’s stature in the global concert market, stating, “In the last decade, Manchester has slipped from a top three global concert market, and is now no longer even in the top ten.

“That is not a reflection of the music or audiences of Manchester, which are stronger than ever.

“It is a reflection on investment in cultural infrastructure. Co-op Live will put Manchester back where it deserves to be, as a global entertainment powerhouse.”

Gary Roden, Executive Director and General Manager of Co-op Live shared his excitement about the venue, declaring, “I have no doubt this venue is going to be one of the world’s best live entertainment experiences, and we can’t wait to announce the iconic artists who will play our stage very soon.”

Etihad Campus

Situated on the world renowned Etihad Campus, home to Manchester City FC and a key member of the City Football Group, Co-op Live will contribute significantly to the development of the campus as a year-round entertainment destination.

Ferran Soriano, CEO at City Football Group, expressed his pride in the partnership with Oak View Group and the positive impact Co-op Live will have on the city of Manchester and its people.

The construction of Co-op Live has not only provided economic opportunities but has also prioritised sustainability.

With a commitment to green initiatives, the arena will rely on all-green electric power, aim for zero waste to landfill, and collect 100% of its rainwater.

Additionally, the partnership with Co-op aligns with the arena’s dedication to social responsibility.

Gigs that give back

Co-op Live will donate a minimum of £1 million annually to support the Co-op Foundation’s youth-led strategy and its vision of creating a fairer world, in a collective effort known as “Gigs that Give Back.”

Amanda Jennings, Director of Marketing Communications at Co-op, spoke enthusiastically about the arena’s embodiment of Co-op’s principles and values.

She revealed exciting plans exclusive to Co-op members, including first-in-line access to tickets and access to unique experiences through the Co-op members app, too.

Co-op Live is set to open its doors in April 2024, signalling the resurgence of Manchester as Europe’s ultimate musical destination.

As the anticipation builds, music enthusiasts eagerly await the announcement of the stellar lineup for the opening season.
