Blending mythology with modern grit, Gods of Salford is a powerful new production commissioned by LOWRY that does more than just entertain—it uplifts.
A bold celebration of creativity, community, and collaboration, the show brings together fresh, untapped talent and seasoned performers to share one stage in an unforgettable theatrical experience.
At the heart of it all? A mission to spotlight the voices of Salford’s next generation of talent.
We caught up with Anthony Quinn, who plays a swaggering, Salford-style Zeus, to find out more about this ambitious show and why it’s unlike anything else on stage right now.
Gods of Salford brings people from the city together to work on this production. Was that a draw for you when deciding whether to be in it?
Absolutely, that was one of the biggest draws for me. The chance to be part of a show that champions young people from in and around Salford.
This isn’t just about putting on a production, it’s about giving young artists and creatives a platform to story tell, have fun on a fantastic stage and follow their dreams.
That and to work with Not Too Tame and director Jimmy Fairhurst, the guys energy and passion is infectious and it’s great to work with him and the rest of the team.
How important are venues like LOWRY in developing people who may not have the experience?
They’re vital. Venues like LOWRY make all the difference, especially when they’re not just staging big shows, but actively investing in the community and opening doors for new talent.
Their 25th Anniversary embodies this. Whether it’s training, paid roles, or just giving someone the belief that they belong in this space, that can change lives.
And Gods of Salford is proof of that!
You play Zeus, can you tell us more about your take on this well-known Greek god?
My version of Zeus is very different to the one you might expect.
He’s powerful, sure, but there’s something a little darker underneath.
He’s so self-centred and completely full of himself.
He’s actually a really fun character to play, he’s all about control and the way he looks. It’s been amusing to blend a world of myth with Salford.
A few references of modern similarities have been used with the younger cast and it’s funny that they go completely over their heads.
What do you love about Manchester?
The people, the culture, the arts, the music, what’s not to love!?
There’s a real sense of humour, resilience, and heart here. If you ask me, it’s hard to find anywhere else that matches it.
There’s a rawness to it, but also so much creativity and soul. Manchester doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not, it’s proud, it’s honest, and it looks after its own.
That same energy runs through this whole production.
Why would you recommend that audiences come along to this unique production?
Because it’s unlike anything else. It’s bold, immersive, and full of energy.
I’ll say it again… Gods of Salford isn’t just a play, it’s a celebration of working-class strength, of youth and community.
It’ll make you feel, make you think, and hopefully remind you why live theatre matters.
Plus, you’ll get to witness some seriously talented young people absolutely smash it. What more could you want?
