Manchester is set to welcome ANOTHER culinary gem as renowned chef Tom Barnes announces the grand opening of his first solo restaurant, “Skof,” in the new NOMA neighbourhood.

Scheduled for spring 2024, Skof promises to be a unique and unforgettable addition to Manchester’s already burgeoning dining scene.

A Culinary Luminary

From Cumbria to Manchester: Tom Barnes’ Culinary Journey

Hailing from Cumbria, Tom Barnes honed his culinary skills at The Lakeside Hotel before venturing into the realms of multi Michelin-starred kitchens.

Returning to his roots in the Lake District in 2011, Barnes joined Simon Rogan’s team at L’Enclume.

His rapid ascent from chef de partie to head chef coincided with the restaurant securing its second Michelin star in 2013.

Roux Scholar and Global Culinary Exploration

Prestigious Awards and International Stints Shape Barnes’ Expertise

Recognising Barnes’ exceptional talent, he was awarded the prestigious Roux Scholarship in 2014 at the age of 25.

His culinary journey took him to acclaimed establishments like Hof Van Cleve in Belgium and Restaurant Geranium in Copenhagen. Returning to Rogan & Co in 2018, Barnes led the restaurant to its first Michelin star in record time.

Culinary Achievements and International Ventures

From Great British Menu Triumphs to UMBEL Restaurants Leadership.

In 2020, Barnes showcased his culinary prowess on BBC2’s Great British Menu, securing victory at the final banquet.

His influence extended globally through pop-up events and collaborations with esteemed venues and festivals. As executive chef for UMBEL Restaurants, Barnes played a pivotal role in overseeing acclaimed establishments like L’Enclume and Rogan & Co.

Skof: A Culinary Haven in Manchester

Tom Barnes’ Vision Comes to Life in NOMA

Skof, Barnes’ first solo venture, promises to be a gastronomic haven within the terracotta-tiled Hanover building in NOMA. Designed by London-based studio Blacksheep, the interiors reflect the dualities of Barnes’ upbringing and Manchester’s industrial history, creating a welcoming space bathed in natural light.

On the decision to choose Manchester as the location for his first solo restaurant, Tom said; “I am so excited to be opening my first restaurant in Manchester. It feels like the right place for me. The food scene is changing so frequently, and everyone I’ve met has been incredibly welcoming. Growing up in Barrow-in-Furness, I knew I wouldn’t want to be too far from my childhood home and my family, so it’s the perfect place.

“I am so grateful for Simon’s support, and I plan on utilising all the skills that he has taught me over the many years that we have worked together. I’m so happy with what we have achieved and look forward to this new chapter.”
