Raise a glass in honour of the great Scottish bard Robert Burns, on this iconic day. 

Although the official Burns Night celebration is on 25th January, the day the poet was born in 1759, events are happening across the city at various times – it’s always best to book early. 

Here’s a selection of what you can look forward to in and around Manchester, from pipers and poetry to whisky tastings and themed suppers.

Burns Night fast approaches this Wednesday 25th January, and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the life and works of the National Bard of Scotland himself: with  Haggis + whisky.

Black Friars are renowned across the city for their amazing pies, and they are creating a special Haggis Pie to celebrate being in the middle of the Festival of Pie.

Just a tenner for a pie, add mash and greens for only £2.50.

Plus, in a nod to all things Scottish, their Highland Park Whisky Hot Toddies are just a fiver too. Rabbie would’ve loved it, wouldn’t he?

Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th Jan. Haggis is £10 and Hot toddies are a fiver.

Not only this, Black Friar has partnered with Macallan to put together a true Scottish whisky alongside a creative new five-course tasting menu.

Known for his clever twist on classics, Chef Ben will be creating traditional Scottish dishes, all specially curated to pair with The Macallan favourites.

Guests will be taken on a journey of fine whisky tasting, led by Senior Whisky Specialist, Michael Green. Michael has over 30 years of experience in the drinks industry and is the head of the Whisky Specialist Team at The Macallan distillery, leading training and tastings all over the country.

The evening kicks off with canapés followed by a Scottish Cullen Skink with a glass of Organic Matetic Riesling. Next is Haggis Neeps and Tatties paired with The Macallan 15-Year-Old Double Cask followed by a Champagne, Nettle, and Lemon Sorbet palate cleanse. Finally, finishing off with the traditional Scottish dessert – the Cranachan paired with The Macallan 18, aged in Sherry Oak for 18 years.

Thursday 25th January sees the annual celebration of the Bard Robert Burns, and Browns have created three courses of traditional Scottish specials to mark the occasion.

Enjoy a hearty Burns Night supper with dishes such as Pan-seared Scallops and Pancetta, Haggis, Neeps & Tatties and an irresistible Cranachan, with each course perfectly paired with a wonderful whisky, including Glenfiddich 12 and 15 years, and Balvenie 12-year-old.

One of the city’s oldest and most vibrant pubs, the Edinburgh Castle in Ancoats, is hosting a Burns night on the 25th of January.

Complete with an eight-course supper, accompanying whisky flight and poetry recital this looks like an incredible event you don’t want to miss.

The star of the Scottish-inspired menu is, of course, the Swaledale lamb Haggis, Royal Oak neeps and tatties.

But if you’re looking to push the boat out and try something way out west, why not try the Irn-Bru pastille?
