Nutcracker in Havana is the classic reworked, adding Cuban influence and intertwining contemporary ballet with Cuban dance style.

The storyline follows a Cuban family during Christmas day, focusing on a young girl named Clara. Her magician godfather, Drosselmeyer, gifts her a nutcracker doll which comes to life in the night and transports her into a magical dream world.

The original Nutcracker is a Russian classic that has inspired the world of ballet since the 1800’s. Over the years, there has been different renditions of Nutcracker and I must say, Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana is definitely my favourite.

Carlos Acosta’s Nutcracker in Havana at LOWRY

Nutcracker in Havana is an absolute joy to watch, offering an experience that is consistently entertaining throughout. From the very first scene, the audience is immersed in the colourful atmosphere, and the energy never wanes.

Each moment is filled with splendid choreography, rich music, and an infectious rhythm that keeps you entertained. There really isn’t a dull moment throughout the entire production, with elements of humour and incredible dancing that will leave a lasting impression.

The stage is full of talented dancers, each showcasing a high level of discipline in their craft and are all deserving of recognition. Every movement is precise, and their flawless execution demonstrates the dedication they’ve put into perfecting their performances.

The dancers’ timing is impeccable and staying synchronised between them maintains a seamless production.

Adria Diaz as Clara

Adria Diaz does an exceptional job in portraying the dainty Clara, with her dance with the Prince, played by Alejandro Silva, being a breathtaking piece in the snow feeling so romantic.

As Alejandro Silva and Laura Rodrigues, portraying the Sugar Plum Fairy, performance their dance duet during Pas De Deux, I’m brought to tears by their chemistry and raw talent, executing an unforgettable exhibition of ballet.

Patricia Torres and Ernrique Corrale

Another incredible duo is Patricia Torres and Ernrique Corrales, who play the lead flower couple, delivering a beautiful performance that will leave you in awe. They are also accompanied by flower girls who also elevate the dance.

Their hard work pays off and is appreciated highly by the audience as I witnessed a 3-minute standing ovation at the end of the show.

Applause to Nina Dunn’s set design, as her crafty colour scheme offers a travel to the exotic Havana. Dunn offers the audience warm, beautiful  colours to perfectly compliment the dynamic energy of the dancers, enhancing the overall atmosphere and immersing the audience in the lively spirit of the production.

The homely set transforms into a mystical wonderland with eccentric colours offering escapism and striking visuals.

Angelo Alberto’s costume design

Angelo Alberto’s costume design captures a richness that perfectly highlights the grandeur of the dreamland portrayed on stage. In the second half, each outfit seems to shimmer with luxury, meticulously crafted to embody both elegance and cultural flair.

The costumes not only reflect the extravagance of the dreamland but also harmonise beautifully with the grace and precision of the dancers’ movements.

The rich fabrics, intricate detailing, and exciting colours elevate the overall aesthetic, further enhancing the sense of magnificence and transporting the audience into a world of magical beauty.
