The Britons Protection

One of Manchester’s most treasured pubs, The Britons Protection, is on the brink of significant changes.

This historic establishment, known for its charming character and rich past, will temporarily close its doors on January 8th.

The closure marks the start of crucial renovations and infrastructure upgrades, with a planned reopening on January 16th.

Changes at the Britons Protection

Owned by Star Pubs, a subsidiary of Heineken, The Britons Protection will undergo a series of enhancements aimed at modernising its facilities while preserving its unique ambiance.

The upgrades include the installation of Wi-Fi cabling, new tills, and essential renovations to the upholstery, flooring, and toilets. Additionally, the function and meeting room spaces will be redecorated, and sustainability improvements will be made to boost the building’s energy efficiency.

A spokesperson for Star Pubs assured patrons that these upgrades will respect the pub’s historic status, maintaining its traditional look and feel. The Britons Protection, with its storied past as a refuge during the Peterloo Massacre and an army recruitment centre during the Napoleonic Wars, stands as a vital piece of Manchester’s cultural tapestry.

Retaining its original character

The future of the pub has been a contentious topic, particularly after a long-standing legal battle between the current licensees, Mark West and Allan Hudd, and the brewery. The dispute, sparked by fears of losing the pub’s distinctive character, culminated in a court case in 2024. Despite a positive resolution that seemed to secure the pub’s future under its existing licensees, the financial strains have led to the current transition of control back to Star Pubs.

This transition has stirred emotions among the pub’s loyal patrons, who cherish The Britons Protection not just for its extensive whisky selection and real ales, but for its essence as a quintessential British city pub.

The absence of distractions like television screens and music in the main areas has fostered a warm, engaging environment that many fear could be lost.

What’s next for the Britons Protection?

As The Britons Protection faces this new chapter, there is a collective hope that Star Pubs will honour their commitment to preserving the pub’s historic charm. The goal is to sensitively restore the venue, ensuring that it continues to serve as a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike.

The heart of The Britons Protection—its timeless character—must remain intact, securing its place as a cherished Manchester institution for generations to come.
