The revamped library boasts a welcoming entrance adorned with a new café, creating a vibrant space for visitors.

Children are in for a treat with an expanded and upgraded area designed just for them.

Improved social spaces, updated digital facilities, and the addition of a mezzanine floor elevate the library’s offerings to cater to diverse interests.

Bolton Central Library temporary home

During the 12-month closure, book enthusiasts found solace in the temporary library at the former New Look unit in Crompton Place. Now, with the main library reopening, the community can enjoy a wealth of new features and improved facilities.

Focussing on community priorities

Bolton Council emphasises that the redesign was guided by customer priorities, including enhanced digital facilities, educational and employment resources, cultural and creative activities, and health-focused initiatives.

Government’s Towns Fund scheme fuels transformation

Funding for this ambitious project came through a successful bid to the Government’s Towns Fund scheme.

This grant, supporting various local projects, has not only rejuvenated Bolton Central Library but also contributed to a new food hall extension at Bolton Market, the creation of Elizabeth Park, improvements to Ashburner Street, and the ongoing conversion of the Wellsprings office building into an innovation hub for start-ups.

Evolution of library services

While book borrowing and reading promotion remain core priorities, the refurbished library aims to redefine the community’s library experience.

The redesigned spaces encourage participation in creative activities, access to the internet, and utilisation of digital equipment.

The addition of mezzanine floors on either side of the main area creates versatile spaces for community and well-being groups.

Dedicated areas for studying and accessing information resources cater to diverse needs, fostering a sense of inclusivity.

Events and performances

Bolton Central Library has a flexible central plaza space that offers exciting event opportunities for organisations and companies.

Performances, author events, and storytelling sessions will find a dynamic platform in this newly envisioned space.

Designed with the younger generation in mind, the library now features a split space for under-fives, fostering play and exploration.

Two additional sections cater to older children and young people, encouraging a love for reading through engaging experiences.

Council’s commitment to community

Nadeem Ayub, Council cabinet member for culture, expresses the council’s commitment to promoting social mobility, quality of life, skills, health, and wellbeing. The revitalized library stands as a multifunctional space, offering a broad spectrum of activities.

Grand reopening celebration at Bolton Central Library

To mark the library’s grand reopening, a festive event will take place on Saturday from 11am-3pm, with a lively ‘disco’ theme featuring a mirror ball. Attendees can enjoy attractions like Lofty the Lion, Octagon storytelling sessions, and Awkward Tree Youth Theatre performances, promising a day filled with excitement and entertainment.
