The town’s dedicated efforts have made it a shining example of an exciting and inclusive community in Greater Manchester.

The Purple Flag: A Mark of Excellence

The Purple Flag, awarded by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM), is a prestigious international accolade that celebrates towns and cities excelling in creating a safe, diverse, and enjoyable nighttime experience.

Altrincham’s commitment to maintaining high standards of nighttime entertainment has earned it this award.

Cllr Tom Ross, the leader of Trafford Council, expressed his delight at the achievement, emphasising how it enhances Altrincham’s overall appeal. He praised the town’s dedication to providing an outstanding nighttime experience and contributing to its thriving community.

Elevating Nightlife Standards

The Purple Flag is awarded to centres that exhibit excellence in managing nighttime offerings, focusing on factors such as entertainment quality, accessibility, safety measures, and local stakeholder collaboration.

Altrincham has not only met but exceeded these criteria, earning its Purple Flag status.

Cllr Ross exclaimed, “This is an amazing achievement, and I am delighted and proud that Altrincham has once again secured a top award.

“The town’s vibrant nightlife, with its fantastic cafes, bars, and restaurants, makes it a superb destination for an evening out.”

He went on to commend the close collaboration between the Council and Altrincham’s Business Improvement District, recognising that their joint efforts were instrumental in achieving this prestigious recognition.

Impressing the Assessors

Altrincham’s Purple Flag assessors were impressed by the town’s well-rounded blend of entertainment, dining, and culture, all while maintaining a focus on safety and the well-being of its residents and visitors.

Key successes highlighted in Altrincham’s application included the convenience of multi-option public transport at a single interchange location, innovative BID partnership initiatives, and the overall cleanliness of the Purple Flag area.

Sacha Lord, Nighttime Economy Advisor for Greater Manchester, praised Altrincham’s achievement, attributing it to the dedicated efforts of the town’s nighttime economy businesses, the Altrincham Purple Flag Working Group, and the Altrincham BID team.

Lord concluded by extending his congratulations to Altrincham for this remarkable accomplishment.

A Collaborative Triumph

The Purple Flag achievement was the result of a collaborative effort involving Altrincham BID, representatives from Trafford Council, Greater Manchester Police, Transport for Greater Manchester, Bruntwood, and the town’s nighttime business operators.

Altrincham BID took the lead on the comprehensive application and assessment process, highlighting the town’s vibrant nightlife, early evening activities, and robust safety measures as key contributors to earning Purple Flag status.

Mandy White, representing Altrincham BID, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to announce that Altrincham has achieved Purple Flag status, a testament to the hard work and determination of our business community.

This achievement reflects our commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable nighttime environment for everyone, from residents to visitors.

“We are grateful for the partnership and dedication demonstrated by the Purple Flag Working Group, local businesses, and all those who contributed to this success.”
