Aladdin Palace Theatre

Disney’s Aladdin is a spectacular marvel that brings the joy of the film, to the stage.

For anyone who does not know the story of Aladdin, it follows a young boy who lives on the street as he finds a lamp that contains a genie.

The genie grants him three wishes one of which is to become a prince, so he can marry the beautiful Princess Jasmine.

And of course, problems ensue, and obstacles are met by the name of Jafar, the Sultan’s advisor.

Incredible stage production

The stage production follows the animation rather closely with added characters and songs.

The sets were beautiful. They were colourful and brought the animation to life.

My favourite set was the Cave of Wonders. It was covered in gold and the doorway to the cave was the lion and he was also covered in gold.

The gold shimmered in the light and it was spectacular. It had the audience ahh-ing as it was revealed.

Bringing the Disney magic

Bob Crowley did a brilliant job at bringing the Disney magic to the production.

We have to talk about the songs, which really made the show for me. The scale of it all was incredible.

My favourite had to be Friend Like Me. It was the longest song, and it was the Genie’s introduction.

There is a moment where he sings old Disney classics and that got the audience laughing and singing along.

The dancing was expressive, and the set was so colourful.

Yeukayi Ushe as the Genie

Yeukayi Ushe as the Genie

A personal highlight for me had to be the Genie who was played by Yeukayi Ushe. He enters the stage first and introduces the characters and the place with Arabian Nights.

After the song, he tells us not to miss him too much as he leaves. When he re-enters in the Cave of Wonders, the cheers are deafening.

He commands the stage, and his quick remarks are never missed.

Desmonda Cathabel who plays Jasmine did an excellent job at showcasing Jasmine’s stubbornness and her fierce mind.

Something I’ve always loved about Jasmine, is that she is a young woman who knows her mind and is very proud of who she is.

Cathabel brought that to the stage, and I felt like I was watching the animation.

Beautiful costume design

One of the standout elements of the production was the costumes, which were a visual feast for the eyes.

The array of vibrant colours and shimmering fabrics truly came to life under the theatre’s lighting, creating a magical atmosphere that captivated the audience.

Among the stunning outfits, my absolute favourite was Jasmine’s wedding ensemble.

This exquisite costume, reminiscent of an elegant Indian lengha, was a masterpiece in itself.

The intricate embroidery, rich textures, and flowing silhouette combined to create a look that was both regal and breathtakingly beautiful.

Each costume in the production showcased the remarkable craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail by designer Gregg Barnes.

Barnes’ dedication to authenticity and his keen eye for detail ensured that every outfit not only echoed the beloved designs from the film but also offered a fresh, realistic interpretation that added depth to the characters.

His work seamlessly blended tradition with innovation, resulting in a wardrobe that was both faithful to the original and stunningly original in its own right.
