It’s always exciting when a new street food pop-up comes to town. And this latest one is destined to get everyone drooling.

Birria is basically a Mexican hangover dish consisting of homemade fried corn tacos loaded with meat and oozing Oaxaca cheese (a Mexican cheese great for melting, similar to Monterey Jack), all dunked in a rich, spiced cooking liquor (consommé).

Essentially, tacos dunked in gravy.

And soon you’ll be able to dunk away to your heart’s content, as they’re coming to The Koffee Pot.

From this Saturday at midday, you’ll be able to get three Birria Brothers tacos, all served with lime, coriander, green jalapeño salsa or red jalapeño salsa – and of course a pot of consommé to dunk them in.

Choices include beef birria tacos (£9.50) using with eight-hour slow cooked shin of beef, and oyster mushroom birria tacos (£9.50), which can be veggie or vegan.

There are also Cabrito goat meat tacos at £12.50, which is a special and will change probably week by week.

Birria tacos originate from the state of Jalisco, with the meat stew traditionally made from goat meat, but occasionally made from beef or mutton.

The dish is often served at celebratory occasions and holidays.

“We were looking for some new hangover foods for the cafe and stumbled over these,” say The Koffee Pot’s co-owners Chris and Sam.

“We researched them loads and tweaked them until we were happy.”

They’ll be available Saturdays only for now, with DIY kits to follow in a week or so.

And the cooking liquor itself has a hint of spice, say Chris and Sam.

“Our consommé, although still traditional, gives a big nod to our favourite curry – a nihari.”

Find the Birria Brothers pop-up at The Koffee Pot, 84-86 Oldham St, from midday on Saturday 6th March. Saturdays only for now, with DIY kits available soon.
