Manchester has been chosen to stage the first ever Paralympic powerlifting world cup in Wythenshawe next month.

The event will also serve as a qualifier for this year’s Tokyo Paralympic games, which is due to take place between 5th August and 6th September.

In total, 118 athletes will be competing for places as entrants from 26 countries go head-to-head for crucial ranking points.

Among the Great Britain team selected are Rio 2016 silver medallist and former world record holder Ali Jawad, two-time Paralympic bronze medallist Zoe Newson, 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Louise Sugden and European champion Micky Yule.

The 15-strong squad will include a mixture of experience and emerging talent, with Liam McGarry and Kim Dean both making their international debuts following impressive progress at the domestic level.

“Competing for Great Britain at a home event is always incredibly special to me as the opportunity to lift in front of friends and family on an international platform is so rare,” said Paralympic silver medallist Ali Jawad.

The event will take place from 20th-23rd February at Wythenshawe Forum and has been funded by UK Sport and the National Lottery. It is being delivered on behalf of World Para Powerlifting by British Weight Lifting, in partnership with UK Sport and Manchester City Council.

Tickets cost just £8 and can be purchased online.
