Manchester United and Scotland great Denis Law, affectionately known as ‘The King of the Stretford End,’ has passed away at the age of 84.
A revered figure in the footballing world, Law’s extraordinary career was defined by his fearless style of play, unmatched goal-scoring ability, and an enduring connection with Manchester United supporters.
Denis Law
Law began his professional journey at Huddersfield Town before moving to Manchester City and then Italian side Torino, where he made waves with his record-breaking transfers.
However, it was at Manchester United, under Sir Matt Busby, that he became a footballing icon. Over an 11-year spell with the Red Devils, Law netted an astonishing 237 goals in 404 appearances, securing his place as the club’s third-highest scorer of all time, behind only Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton.
He won two league titles with United and played a pivotal role in the club’s historic European Cup triumph in 1968, when United became the first English side to lift the prestigious trophy. His achievements were recognised on an individual level as well; in 1964, Law became the only Scotsman to win the Ballon d’Or, cementing his legacy as one of football’s all-time greats.
The Law family statement
A statement from Law’s family reads: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally, he is now at peace.
“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made a difference. Thank you.”
Manchester United paid their respects in a heartfelt statement:
“Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84.
“With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players. The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit and love for the game made him the hero of a generation.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’ family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.”
A Scottish hero
Beyond his achievements at United, Law was a national hero. Capped 55 times by Scotland, he remains the joint all-time leading scorer for his country with 30 goals, sharing the honour with Kenny Dalglish. Making his international debut at just 18, Law’s contributions to Scottish football were as significant as his club career.
Following the news of his passing, Manchester United fans have gathered at Old Trafford to pay tribute to their beloved King. Scarves, flowers, and heartfelt messages have adorned his statue, part of the iconic United Trinity alongside George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton. One tribute poignantly read: “The true King. RIP. The Trinity back together. God bless.”
Supporters of all generations have united in grief, with touching gestures from young and old alike paying homage to the man whose name is synonymous with the glory days of Manchester United. A quote from renowned journalist Hugh McIlvanney captured the sentiment perfectly: “If you were to send a man out to score a goal to save your life, send for the Lawman.”
Law’s legacy is immortalised not only in his record-breaking achievements but also in the hearts of the countless fans he inspired. His love for the game and the unbreakable bond he shared with supporters will be remembered forever.
The King of the Stretford End has left us, but his memory and impact will remain eternal. Rest in Peace Denis Law.
