It was the biggest scandal since The Great Train Robbery. The great gravy train hoax. After much speculation, the people behind Gravy Bar have finally fessed up.

On 9th March, Gravy Bar announced itself on Twitter as Manchester’s first deluxe cuisinery focussed on gravy.

Because as we all know, gravy is sexy.

Now they’ve finally confessed.

“Unfortunately, the launch on 1st April did not go to plan. After a large and as of yet unexplained explosion in gravy still #6b, more than 2,000 litres of scalding artisanal gravy were unleashed upon our customer base and then into the streets of Manchester. Our founder, Nikki, has not been seen since. The venue has now been sealed and condemned as unsafe. We are pleased to declare Gravy Bar a resounding success.”

In just three-and-a-half weeks, Gravy Bar gained 1800+ followers, over 250,000 tweet impressions and coverage in more than 30 publications. Manchester Evening News, Metro, The Evening Standard, Huffington Post UK and the “i” all jumped on the gravy train.

So well done to the people behind it. It would have made an excellent April Fool’s Day story.

We were expecting an announcement of who is behind the hoax or why they did it. But we’re still waiting.

It just goes to show how easy it is to get fake news published in the media and how gullible the press and public are. The lesson to be learnt is simple.

Always check your sources. And your sauces. Especially when it’s gravy.
