Manchester pub launches a darts academy led by Luke Littler’s mentor

A darts expert who mentored a young Luke Littler has teamed up with a Manchester pub to launch the White Swan Darts Academy, aiming to inspire and encourage youngsters to take up the sport.

A darts expert who mentored a young Luke Littler has teamed up with a Manchester pub to launch an academy aimed at encouraging youngsters to take up the sport.

Arran Mattinson, former manager of the Lancashire Youth Darts team where Littler played, has established a club for 8 to 16-year-olds at Joseph Holt pub, The White Swan in Swinton.

He approached landlady Lindsey Smethills with the idea of running a weekly group to tap into the current darts craze.

Lindsey said: “When Arran spoke to me about his idea, I thought it made perfect sense.

“Luke Littler has created so much interest in darts through his amazing success.

“And as a pub we are always looking for ways to do things for the community.

“So, it seemed like the perfect time to do something like this – not least because there aren`t many opportunities round here for children so young to learn how to play. And from such an expert!”

Manchester-based Joseph Holt

The White Swan, owned by Manchester-based Joseph Holt, is one of 127 pubs the brewery operates across the North West.

The brewery has a special connection with Warrington darts sensation Luke Littler, as his brother Leon works as a bartender at another Joseph Holt pub, The Millhouse.

In January, neighbours and friends gathered at the White Swan to support Luke Littler as he competed in the World Championship final against Luke Humphries.

The new club, known as the White Swan Darts Academy, is already a huge success.

However, out of all the children who attend, only one is a girl.

Arran hopes this will change, especially since Eleanor Cairns, a former trainee and recent WDF World Champion, recently visited the club.

Four-time Ladies BDO World Champion Lisa Ashton has also promised to visit.

Arran said: “Darts is a fantastic game for young people.

“It requires concentration, and develops maths and social skills – and of course is a constructive way for youngster to spend their free time.”
