Manchester City’s £300m expansion plans set to transform Etihad Stadium into world-class venue

In a major move that is set to transform the fan experience at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City has submitted a planning application for a brand-new entertainment destination.

The proposal includes an expanded North Stand with a larger, single upper tier above the existing lower tier, increasing the stadium capacity to over 60,000.

The development also includes a covered City Square fan zone with a capacity for 3,000 people, a new club shop, a museum, and hotel – all fully integrated into the North Stand.

The all-weather facilities are designed to provide a year-round entertainment and leisure destination for fans and the local community.

Following a consultation period where fans and the local community were invited to share their feedback on concepts and designs, Manchester City said they were pleased to announce that fans were in favour of the proposals.

In addition to the expanded North Stand and all-weather facilities, the plans include a sky bar with views overlooking the pitch and a stadium roof walk experience.

A covered City Square fan zone with a variety of food and drink outlets, a new club shop, a museum, and a 400-bed hotel are also proposed.

The development represents a significant investment of over £300m into East Manchester and is expected to create up to 2,600 jobs, prioritised for people from Greater Manchester.

The project is set to take up to three years to complete.

Danny Wilson, Managing Director – of Manchester City Operations, commented on the submission of the planning application: “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our fans and the local community for their participation in our recent consultation, not only for completing the questionnaire but sharing their detailed comments and feedback with us, all of which has been carefully reviewed and considered.”

He added, “As with all Club developments, ensuring our local community benefit is a key priority and we believe these proposals will deliver long-term economic and social opportunities, building on the regeneration work delivered in East Manchester by City Football Group since 2008.”

The planning application has been submitted to Manchester City Council and, if approved, will bring a whole new level of excitement and entertainment to the Etihad Stadium, say the club.
