Kylie Platt may have died on the cobbles of Coronation Street two years ago, but the actress who played her is busier than ever.

Paula Lane starred in #BeMoreMartyn at the Hope Mill Theatre recently and she’s about to go on tour in the multi award-winning musical, Kinky Boots, which comes to the Opera House in November. We caught up with her for a cuppa and a Kit Kat.

How is life after Corrie? Do you miss it?

Life is wonderful. Family is the most important thing to me. Corrie was a rollercoaster and it’s given me the building blocks to create my career. My last role as Rachel in #BeMoreMartyn was equally as special – a true life lesson in believing you can achieve anything if you work hard enough. I find it fascinating that both my roles post-Corrie ring out the message, ‘Just be who you want to be’.

What attracted you to Kinky Boots?

I was invited to watch the West End production in February – that’s how it all started! I love a musical and this one in particular has it all – heartbreak, love, loss, comedy and the ability to not just move an audience but transform them.

Tell us a bit about your character

I play Lauren, one of Charlie’s workers at the factory. What I adore about her is that there is no filter. She is a gift of a part.

Do you have a favourite song in the show?

Lauren has her own number – History of Wrong Guys – so obviously that because I have to give it everything I have. It’s an incredibly funny integral part of the musical and so many people can relate to her feelings.

What are you looking forward to most about Kinky Boots?

I’m most looking forward to spreading a joyous message all over the country and celebrating that with our audiences.

You also run the Lane Shaw Academy in Hebden. This must be really fulfilling?

It is. I love passing on my knowledge and direction, but I also learn a huge amount from our performers too.

Many arts-based subjects are disappearing from the curriculum. Should places like Lane Shaw be plugging the gap?

I think that it’s vital the arts are available to all. We try and pride ourselves on being fun and affordable. Not all families are in a position to have extra expenditure. We have a great space. You don’t need a fancy expensive room to create drama.

What are your favourite haunts in Manchester?

I’m very good friends with Jennie McAlpine and I love Annie’s, the restaurant she runs with her husband Chris. I love getting away from it all and relaxing there.

What do you love about Manchester?

I love the vibe, its heartbeat. There is something for everyone and you’re never bored.

Anything you would change?

When I worked on Corrie, I always wished the tram had an express line from Victoria to Media City.

Kinky Boots is at the Opera House from 12 November – 1 December 2018.
