First Street is a unique part of Manchester which seamlessly brings together opportunities to both work and play – and it’s set to become the city’s latest food & drink hotspot.
Its location on the corner of Whitworth Street makes it popular with business people, local residents and students. Home to destinations such as HOME, Pizza Express, Street on First and the popular street food restaurant Indian Tiffin Room, First Street is dedicated to delivering social experiences and showcasing Manchester’s rich cultural history. Wandering into First Street, you have endless options on how to spend your time.
When you first enter the First Street district, you’ll be overwhelmed by the amount of open space and the colourful building facades that result in a vibrant, modern look. The proximity of different leisure outlets and services means that there is something to suit every budget and occasion whether it is a quick drink after work, a lunchtime snack or a theatre and dinner experience. First Street is always buzzing with activity whatever the occasion.
Culture more your style? Then pay a visit to the eclectic cultural arts venue HOME and enjoy an array of live performances and film screenings. Formed last year through a merger of the Cornerhouse and Library Theatre, HOME has deservedly been labelled Manchester’s centre for international contemporary art, theatre and film.
Comprising a 500-seat theatre, a 150-seat flexible studio space, a large gallery for the finest contemporary art, five cinema screens and an expansive café restaurant and bar, HOME strives to bring the best entertainment, music and art to a diverse audience. HOME’s dynamic programme of events, festivals and screenings ensure that HOME is certainly a place for everyone.
You will find the stylish blue-black metallic panels of HOME on the corner of Tony Wilson place sandwiched between the UK’s first INNSIDE hotel and First Street’s Q-park multi-storey car park, both designed by local architect Ian Simpson.
The space can be easily accessed from Whitworth Street West, Oxford Road and main transport links include the Deansgate-Castlefield Metrolink stop and Oxford Road Station.
Scheduled to open in the next few months are some great new food and drink additions to the street including The Liquor Store, The Dockyard and The Launderette.
The eagerly anticipated official opening of The Liquor Store takes place on Saturday 8th October and follows the success of its Deansgate venue, named ‘Best Bar’ at the Manchester Eat Drink Sleep Awards. It was noted by the judges for its refreshing cocktails and a cool atmosphere shaped by its Mancunian roots.
To add to the cocktails and carbs offering, Chorlton-born The Laundrette are set to open their sexy new bar early November. Expect house house, cocktails and pizzas.
Office building Number One is home to global companies such as Auto Trader, Ford Credit Europe, Jacobs and Amaze – and is proving itself to be a hotspot for business relocating from outside of the city into Manchester. Number 8 is another stunning new office building which is currently under construction which will feature unique winter gardens as well as more retail and leisure amenities.
When complete, these new places and experiences will join Pizza Express, Sainsbury’s, Q-Park and INNSIDE Hotel – all within the 20-acre area.
First Street is constantly evolving as a community and there are plans for the creation of 600 homes on First Street South with new vibrant open spaces for both local neighbours and the public. All in all, First Street offers a real mix of lifestyles and cultures that all come together in one colourful place.
