Anyone who lives in the Swinton area and has popped into The White Horse pub on Worsley Road is no doubt familiar with their regular fundraising initiatives for various charities over the years – and they are also more than likely to be familiar with Kev Parkinson.
Back in the good old days when you could actually stand or sit at a bar, you were likely to find him in his regular spot where he even has a plaque stating ‘Kev’s Corner’.
These days, it’s a table in the corner job for Kev. But that hasn’t prevented him getting involved with the latest charity fundraiser for Macmillan.
Like so many organisations, Macmillan have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and desperately need the support of the thousands of people who regularly undertake various challenges, hold events or alter their appearance to raise much-needed funds.
Once again, it is the latter for Kev, who in the past has had his much talked about beard shaved off and hair shaved. This time, he has agreed to dye his beard Macmillan green for the month of October.
In just a few days, The White Horse has raised over £422, and they’re still taking donations towards the bearded one’s fundraising efforts.
Landlady Danielle Tiernan has got involved with the month-long fundraising activities too, and regulars or even passers-by won’t want to miss this one: on Sunday 4th October, there’s the chance to ‘Egg The Boss’.
From 2.30pm, for a donation of £1, you can throw an egg at Danielle. Social distancing rules obviously apply, but this is not an opportunity to miss out on, so get yourself down there armed with as many £1 donations as you can afford.
Macmillan, which provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer, is a charity close to people’s hearts – and Danielle feels very passionate about supporting them through these difficult times.
“Macmillan is a charity that in Greene King pubs we support all year round,” she says.
“With 2020 being the year that no one predicted, they, like many other charities, have been hit hard.
“Doing our part as a community pub is a big thing, and Macmillan definitely has a place in many people’s hearts. It’s amazing the support which we receive when we do fundraisers throughout the year, and to get regulars involved is great community spirit.
“I too, of course, have agreed to do my part on Sunday… I don’t know what I have let myself in for, but it’s all for a good cause!”
It’s also, of course, a great excuse to allow somebody else do the Sunday lunch for you, as you can enjoy two courses including a traditional roast with all the trimmings for £10.79.
There is also a hamper to be won full of beer, wines, chocolate and a pub voucher, for £1 a ticket or £4 a strip. This will be running from Monday 19th, and all monies raised go to Macmillan.
Plus, there’s a frame with £25 worth of scratch cards and lottery tickets to be won (£1 a ticket and £4 a strip) with all proceeds to Macmillan, running from Monday 5th October until Sunday 18th October.
